Hmm.... interesting plan with just /two/ flaws..
One: I'm attached to the ship.
And Two: I'm attached to the ship.
Now, I know that's really only /one/ flaw, but it seemed to important I thought I'd mention it twice...

Actually seeing as he would only feel bad the rest of his life, ie most likely ten minutes that might not be a big factor. Never the less, I think the killing of such a lovely (and punctual) elevator would be a shame, ergo we need another plan.
