I think it's a good idea, although clearly it would be a good idea if you asked first as some people don't seem so keen. I also like the blog idea and I do like what you're doing with the themed thing, havign two or three different entries under a daily topic, mainly because you featured one of mine once and I keep looking to see if you've done it again!

MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship.

I guess it doesn't really matter if a PS goes on the FP as, surely, the whole idea of PS is to set out who the HooTooer is, and anyone can access it from 'Who's Online' anyway? Quite a number of people have nothing on their FP, some have blobs and links to other areas, and some are just factual. Mine is possibly too factual!

So it personally doesn't bother me if it is on the FP or not.

However whether it will attract more hits or not? Well, I honestly don't think it will.

The smiley - lurkers are there already but, as someone else said, it could be difficult to patrol and to ensure newbies, who haven't learnt HooToo netiquette yet, learn restraint and don't create problems.

There have been too many of those here.

Maybe PS's could also have a box 'Not for the FP' by the side of them, giving HooTooers the choice, but with it already ticked, so a HooTooer has to untick it to request that option?

Just a thought!

Hmmmm

I think you need to know someone to appreciate their PS, if you don't it gives you a general idea - but the first impression could be terribly wrong.smiley - erm

Maybe if you could opt out it would be ok, or if you could find a few brave souls to run a trial for a week or so to see what happens.smiley - 2cents

I'm quite smiley - smiley to play smiley - mouse pig, if necessary.

I have nothing to hide, and with the amount of smiley - porkpie I get already, another 20,000 a day is not going to make a great deal of difference, as it all gets deleted.

My PS is open and smiley - angel, and says who I am in RL. Maybe that is exceptional on this site, but I cannot hide behind a veil of pretence.

Even my tagline is smiley - angelt, as anyone who knows me, or has met me can profess.

smiley - biro me up, and I'll give it a go.

Bring it on, and trial it, and I'll let you know!

I think it's worth a try. I knew from the start that my PS was 'open', as it were, so I can't see why users would have anything to hide. Havin said that, being able to opt out (or in) is probably the better way to do it. My PS is rather dull but, if people want to look at it, they already can (incidentally, I wonder how many PSs have been checked out because of this thread?!). My only worry would be that, if it was advertised on the front screen, people would expect it to contain something interesting.

Re earlier post (25?) perhaps there should be a guide entry about hootoo netiquette? (if there isn't already.)

Test it out I reckon smiley - smiley

Well, there is the official help page for netiquette on hootoo here: A901838, and a small contribution to the subject here: A20026252. I'm sure there's more to be found somewhere, but for an obvious reason, they're the ones that were easy to find right now. smiley - biggrin

I'm not really here

I don't like the idea, I'll be honest. I think highlighting people's journals would be something similar along the same lines and may encourage people to join in posting, where a PS doesn't in the same way.

A lot of people have or have had very personal and sensitive material on their spaces and journals which ought not be given centre stage, I reckon. If it were voluntary, fair enough.

Featuring PS's on the FP is a good idea, but it should be done with the researcher's approval, as a PS is what it says - a *personal* space. If you choose them randomly, you could end up upsetting someone and driving them away from the site.

It's an attempt to raise the awareness of the community, and I applaud this kind of initiative.

I normally only check them out if I see a name I haven't seen before, to see if they are a newbie. Most PSs I see are quite interesting, but fairly static. I've never really taken the trouble to browse around the PS's, and there isn't really an easy way to do so, so why not feature the occasional interesting one?

But a *personal* space is not the same as a *private* space. By definition, nothing on hootoo is private. This was one of the many things that got Wolfden so confused.

I like the idea of researcher's approval. I know that when you sign up on bebo, for example, there is a tick box for whether you would mind appearing on their front page.

Yes, I'm on bebo. Yes, I know, it is an evil thing. But several people that I know in RL are on there. At least it's not as evil as MySpace.

That's as may be, but some people may be sensitive to the Great Unwashed trampling all over their page and leaving unsolicited messages. If it causes even one researcher to get the hump, then it won't be worth it. Best ask first.
