h2g2 Musicians Guild Posted Aug 10, 2001
Welcome Sid, Proglodyte, and Danny B. I've accepted you all into the Musicians Guild. You're now officially MuGs, and your names appear on our group's membership roster.
Sid, you might want to get in touch with one of our members -- aka -- about trading baselines and/or chord structures for songs. I know there was an attempt at a group project earlier, and it just didn't work out due to various odd issues.
Proglodyte, folks have asked for free lessons here before. The problem is that it's very hard to give lessons through text messages! And our members are spread out all over the world, making it pretty unlikely that one will live nearby you who is capable of teaching the instrument you want to learn. Sorry.
Of course, we do have a lot of other members to converse with. You all can feel free to start up a conversation at any time. I do recommend doing this on the Guild's main pages, where members pop by to check the latest. I wouldn't do it here, as most folks unsubscribe from this thread a bit after they join.
Well, here are the usual links I give to new members.
To put our group graphic on your personal space, go to:

We're always updating the Guild's Homepage at:

You can browse around h2g2's music entries at:

I hope you enjoy your time as a MuG!

Yo, Bassman! I finally got around to joining!!!
I play everything.
I love piano, sax, guitar, trumpet & vocals the most. I play different styles. After all music is music, even bad music is good if you're a bit altered.
I'm a gracefully aging Hippie. ~Love & Peace~
I'm a Floyd-a-holic.
About 100 years ago I was in a band: The Pace Setters
And ALL my boyfriends were in bands. Until I sobered up when I was 28.
Now I just hang out in my cabin playing my keyboard and scaring
little children away from my woods. I just lay in a hammock near the river & play my Cherokee/carved flute.
Love Beads for everyone!

Jed the Humanoid -Keeper of things lost down the back of the sofa-also the Chief Mad Drunken Warrior of the Anti Squirrel League Posted Aug 13, 2001
Hiya, Jed here, requesting membership to your little Guild of peoples.
I can't remember all the questions you asked me to answer..but here goes anyway.
I play Piano (since i was about seven...and I'm still poo), sing (both of these quite badly) and want to get into Computer Music (Sampling, Sequencing, Synthesising etc) but have very little idea where to start (this was my main impetus for joingin..i figure someone around here probably knows about all this stuff and could help..if you could direct me in his/her direction it would be much appreciated). I play piano occasionally for my band, 'Tubular Luggage', my official role in which is the lead singer (although I prefer the term Vocalist..that way it sounds like I don't neccasarily sing....and though i try to...i generally end up vocalising instead).
My favourite composer (old stylee) would probably be Bach...just because he wrote my favourite piece..the Prelude in C from the Well-Tempered Clavichord. Band wise I have lots of favourites...and try to encompass as large a range as possible, from Queen to Grandaddy to Radiohead to the Super furry animals to Belle and Sebastian(probably my five favourite bands). The people I admire most in music are Thom Yorke, Nick Drake, Trent Reznor and Freddie Mercury..and then some.
As i mentioned earlier..what i would like from the guild is the chance to be able to find people with similar interests in Computer music to help me decide what kit i want...I've breifly researched the subject and seem to be stuck in several quandaries about which way i should take my mini home studio..once i've saved up the neccasary money..which will probably about seventy years from now

Hello, my name is Dax and I would like to join...
I don´t play an instrument, but I do sing, quite well I´m told... Anyway I love doing it and have been singing in School choirs and bands since I was 6.
I love all sorts of different music, but my all time passion is the Band R.E.M., I WORSHIP them and currently have 11 of their albums in my collection. I also LOVE Sting, but unfortunatly don´t have that many of his albums.
If you know of any members here that share my passion for R.E.M. or Sting I would be much abliged for their names so I can get in touch with them. I don´t really have time to backlog a 100 threads to find out myself.
kind regards,
Dax

Shrimp, keeper of petty nitpicking [(-1+8)x(-2+9-1-0)=42] Posted Aug 14, 2001
Okay let me join in here and apply for (life long?) membership.
First off, like for most of you people, music is essential for me. Since there apparently is a lack of publicity here about progmetal and progrock, I volunteer to be one of the MuGs experienced in this field. Favourite band? Hard to tell. Dream Theater is fairly known metal-wise. Spocks Beard and the Flower Kings rule the progrock kingdom.
And I myself am a shrimp. At least compared to the aforementioned musicians. I did receive classical piano training for about ten years, and nowadays I mostly play synthesizer. Since I wouldn't be a true metal fan without owning a guitar I bought one. And since I got one I could as well try to learn to play one. That's where I'm stuck but I'm having great fun anyways. I'm not interested in playing in a 'real' band (I don't have time for it anyways), but I frequently jam with some friends.
I only discovered h2g2 fairly recently (the site, not the book), but my contributions are on their way. Oh yeah, I don't know if you're still interested but I know some HTML and JavaScript.
Cheers!

Can I join the musicians guild please? I play Eb tuba and enjoy listening to most types of music but especially rock such as U2 and Queen (I also enjoy Frank Sinatra).
I'd be happy to help with the guild page if there's an opening, but if not, not to worry.

I play the six and twelve string guitar, the harmonica and a little autoharp. I am privileged to be allowed to sing and play in church now and then. Although I am drawn to Old Time Gospel and American Folk, I cannot say I have a favorite genre, artist or band. I believe the intangible reward of just being able to claim association with the Musicians Guild is enough,
I am not very enthusiastic about volunteering. But maybe in the future, after I figure things out a little...

My main instrument is the guitar, been playing for, oh, 35 years maybe? Currently play with The Jive Turkeys.
Liked The Beatles, liked Blur even better, although my favourite track is probably Red Guitar by David Sylvian.
Big fan of Coltrane & Parker, McCoy Turner.
Probably Shosakovitch, Bartok, Vaughan Williams in the classical form.
Not sure what I'd want from The Guild, am new to H2G2.

Hi! I am trillianette. I have been playing the violin for five years, since the fifth grade, and it will continue as long as possible. I love it! Also, I am learning how to play the guitar. Composers I like are Corelli, and Vivaldi, among many others. I listen to almost everything. Except country. What I want from this is tomeet other music people.

Please let me in.
I am a (chiefly electric) guitarist, singer (because no-one else ever want's to do it) and harmonica player. I also dabble in melodeon, bass, keyboards and anything else that I can get my hands on. I play in a band, The Emotion Heaters, with three mates. We make lots of noise. Blues noise. Dave and Andy, the other guitarist and bass player and I used to play in a band called "Sandy Heath And The Transmitters" a very funny pun if you live in North Herts or Bedfordshire (UK).
My favourite guitar player is Richard Thompson, but I have time for anybody who can play a couple of notes together. Also listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mike Oldfield etc etc. Women singers are fab, Joan Armatrading, Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, the woman from Swing Out Sister etc.
Don't know what I want, I suppose encouragement, a degree of cameraderie and a warm glow. I also need someone to stop me spending any more money on any musiacal gear. My marriage may depend on it! (actually the problem to be fair is about space). I have just managed to hook my midi keyboard up to the PC so I might look for some help with that.
I would love to be able to help maintain the site but can't even find my own message centre.
Pinkpaisley comes from the finish on my beloved Fender Telecaster. Spent £500 on it and dare not use it in case I give it a ding so I usually play one of my others (Fender Strat, Squire Tele or Epiphone Les Paul).

Hi, I'd also like to join the Musicians Guild!
I play keyboard, but not so often anymore since I'm studying in a dorm.
I also do some singing, most at home with my brother. I'm not in a chorus at the moment, so don't get misled by my Nickname....
If you want to hear a favourite band, I'd have to name "Bluatschink", just for the fun that noone else will know it... They are nice and philosophical, too.
I guess the sense of the guild should be to do some sites about music and get us folks together. You could also start a faculty in the University Of Life to do some fieldstudies...
I could also help to do some GuideML pages if you need me. I just started to learn it last week, but I guess I still can do that...

Er, I'd like to put the symbol thingy onto my Home Page, but I don't seem to be able to put it there. Any info. I could get from my fellow music lovers would be muchly helpful.
If it makes a difference...I am in the Blue Goo & I have an iMAC. I am a bit 'computerly challenged'.

I am a 20 year old female from India. I play the piano, and I also sing...I am semi-classically trained in Indian classical music. I have also been a member of a church-choir till I got chucked out because I was caught smoking (!!)
I listen to a lot of different types of music...Indian as well as "Western". My favourite bands are Pink Floyd, The Doors, U2,and Dire Straits. I love Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Enya, and Jim Morrison's poetry.
From mycountry, I am crazy about our best band "Indian Ocean", as well as regional Bengali bands like Chandrabindoo, Prashpathar, and Mohiner Ghoraguli. I also love Songs of Tagore ( Rabindra sangeet), and singers like Sagar Sen, Kishore Kumar, and Hemant Mukherjee.
I would like to share my views and information on music with others from all over the world, which I believe this Guild can help me accomplish.
I want to learn more about music. It is just an urge.

Hello MuG type people, I am the very bad man, a wannabe DJ that has been practising for a couple of years now and still hasn't given up! Please stop me if you dont know what of what I talk, I will try to educate the world, check me out at my home. Guess I would just like some people to talk to about entries and stuff, maybe meet some other b-boys? Thankyou for listening, VBM, out. (peace).

I'd like to join if possible!
I'm a bass player (5 stringer, westfield no less) and guitarist...
I've played in Rock City in Nottingham and various student unions and dodgy rock pubs nationwide, in a really REALLY bad punk covers band called the NOISY SLUTS ... we did do some original material, but it was apalling. People seemed to like us anyway. It broke up when we all went our different ways.. i'd quite like to start something else up soon along similar lines..
musical tastes.. anything ANGRY
Personal favourites are Lunachicks, Ministry, PWEI, hole, babes in toyland, white zombie, front 242, new model army, the VKTMS, the dwarves, social distortion, the forgotten rebels, ani di franco, daisy chainsaw, and LOTS of others (in no particular order) ..
I do sing, but mainly where nobody can hear me =) Bizarrely, as soon as i am aware of an audience my throat goes all funny and i start squawking.
..i just wanted to meet other musicians...... the back of a fag packet in the local rehearsal rooms works just as well i know but this way i don't have to leave my seat =)

Hello
I'd love to join! I play guitar in many styles. I have a Gibson Les Paul Classic that I love and cherish. I have been playing for 19 years I do sing too - generally at the top of my voice whilst ironing. I used to do a lot of choral singing actually and I do miss it oddly enough...
Favourite composer: probably Holst.
Favourite genre: ooh probably Rock/Metal
Favourite to sing/play at home: good old folk
Favourite band: Led Zeppelin
From this Guild I would like good discussion on a range of topics and maybe get come contacts! I play on my own and would like to get together with others of any ability in my local area (Portsmouth. Its also just nice to talk music and find out new stuff.
