Sadly there will always be individuals and groups who believe they have a monopoly on truth and are filled with rage and a sense of impotency and injustice because the rest of the world does not act or think as they feel they should and sometimes that rage will manifest itself in inhuman acts that foil those who work to protect us - the selfless acts of those who rush to help the injured without thinkiing of their own safety shows why such acts are always wrong and all the rest of us can do is show although we are saddened and appalled by such acts we are not cowed and will Keep Calm and Carry On.

I took the bus and subway trains into Boston today, and walked from Kenmore Station to Coolidge Corner [Brookline] to see the film"On the Road." It was perfectly safe. There were soldiers stationed here and there at intervals, but everyone was calm. There were fewer passengers on the buses and trains than usual for the time of day and day of the week. Part of it, though, is that a portion of Boston three blocks wide and a mile long has been cordoned off by detectives so they can work on finding out who was responsible for the bombings. Residents aren't even allowed access to their homes in that zone. The Boston Public Library is closed. Some major hotels are closed. Many businesses in the zone are closed. People who would otherwise be commuting to jobs or homes in that area are not doing so, therefore fewer people are riding public transportation.

It seems impressive the state resources available to lock down urban zones when called upon. I assume they are also combing through everyone's phone records, emails, twitters etc.

They're doing their jobs, Stone Aart. And the fact that the bomb went off means we can reasonably assume that they're not overstepping their bounds either. So leave 'em alone.

A right-wing media pundit from the United States has called for all Muslims to be killed in response to the Boston Marathon bombings.
Erik Rush, a regular on Fox News, appeared to attribute blame to Islamic extremists following yesterday’s blasts, in which at least three people were killed.
Another Twitter user asked, “Are you ALREADY BLAMING MUSLIMS??” – to which Rush reportedly responded: "Yes, they're evil. Let's kill them all."

From wiki:
As of 2010, over 1.6 billion or about 23.4% of the world population are Muslims

Boston has a long tradition of outdoor gatherings. The Boston Marathon has been perfectly safe for more than 100 years. On July 4th, more than a million people sometimes gather on the Esplanade [along the Charles River] to hear the Esplanade Orchestra give its annual Fourth of July concert. These are happy occasions. It grieves my heart to think of people being afraid to gather like that. People huddle indoors for four or five months during the winter. What makes it bearable is the thought of happy sunny days in the Spring and Summer, when they can get out and congregate in the city's many public areas -- the long chain of jogging-biking paths along the river, the developing Rose Kennedy Greenway [where the elevated Central Artery used to be], the beautiful areas in the center of Copley Square, the area around the reflecting pool at the Christian Science Center, Boston Common, The Public Gardens, the elegant center strip along Commonwealth Avenue [complete with benches, grass, and venerable shade trees], the Faneuil Hall area, the City Hall Plaza, and so on. Boston was laid out with a sense of elegance and repose. It's a walkable city.

Right, obviously I was talking about the people investigating the crime. Not some lunatic named Erik Rush. Diss on him all you want.

It's predictable that there would be people sounding off with crazy theories based on no actual evidence. The U.S. has managed to produce some people who meet the definition of terrorist. The investigators will determine whether the people responsible in this case are native to the U.S., or are foreigners. As far as I know, no one has come forward claiming responsibility.

I blame the Irish.
Boston has always had an Irish problem.
The Kennedys were accused of funding the IRA.
paulh may remember when the last "Irish Need Not Apply" sign
was finally taken down.
(safe html link: http://www.thenoiseboard.com/lofiversion/index.php?t171160.html )
So it was an Irish Muslim who didn't wanna pay taxes (due
last night at midnight) and who probably suspected that most
of the women runners were on the Pill or he mighta just objected
to Massachusetts allowing gay marriage.
Or it coulda been a New York Mets fan.
Or Faux News...
Hey I'm just spitballing here.

I remember an old Charlie Brooker column where he discussed terrorism and how people adapt to fatalities in bombs, that if you really wanted to create terror you'd use a bomb that causes limbs to be amputated but caused few fatalities. This seems very close to that idea and he's right, it's pretty terrifying.
When I hear stories of marathon runners finishing and running straight to give blood or to help those affected I'm reminded of the Aaron Sorkin's speech about terrorism in the West Wing:
"We did not seek nor did we expect a confrontation with evil. The true measure of a people is how they respond to acts or terror. Upon hearing the explosions, athletes ran into the fire. *Into* the fire. The streets of heaven are crowded with angels tonight: they're our sons and brothers and sisters and friends."
Whenever I'm tempted to lose faith in people because of stuff like this, I only need to remind myself that people ran into the explosions to help complete strangers. Good people have always and will always outnumber the s who do stuff like this.

Agreed Lago, it was so good to see the good people in the coverage.
I've seen some incredibly graphic images since the event, and in them there are ordinary people faced with extraordinary situations with what can only be thought of as truly amazing behaviour. The one that sticks in my mind is a photograph of a man pinching shut an artery hanging from a missing leg. This man isn't a doctor, or any form of medic, not even a first responder. He was just a bloke on the scene to support a friend who was running.
That's why idiots will never win, because there are people like that bloke out there.

That's why I see the people running towards the blast with mixed feelings (because in the end, until we are faced with it we won't know how we would react in such a situation). It really does show humanity in its best light.
But the evildoers would really achieve so much more terror with a 2nd device timed to go off when the maximum number of helpers have arrived...
