<< please do give a report on what the Gruesomes are calling Space-Jumanji >>
Well, that's exactly it. Space Jumanji. The special effects blew me away - but then I'm a space nut.
There were parts when I burst out laughing (nobody else did), and the aliens were top notch. Then there was Andrew, by my side, eyes glued to the screen, for the whole 90 minutes. (Usually only Harry Potter gets such attention). Worth every penny of the admittance fee. He hasn't stopped talking about it since we left, and he's now busy making his own version of the game with pen and paper.
10/10

I saw the trailer for Zathura and thought it looked like a second-run Jumanji, is it really that good?

Psycho (can I call you that? ) I think the point about the El Santo movies is that you have to be prepared to take them exactly as they are. It helps if you have some background knowledge about the Lucha Libre tradition and it's place in Mexican society, but these movies do pretty much what it says on the tin.
To try and dress them up any other way is frankly silly and not really doing them justice.

when we saw the trailer at the cinema, I managed to miss the fact that it's connected to Jumanji. So I just thought it was a rip off.
But the gruesomes are very keen - they absolutely love Jumanji, so if you give it 10/10, Annie, I think we'll have to go.

Took one of the wains to Chicken Little yesterday - had me in tears.
SPOILER ALERT!
Fabbo soundtrack, lovely voice casting..
At the start we jokingly said to each other "Well, what do you think this one will be about then? " and I answered in jest "Is it set in a galaxy far far away?"
so I was delighted at the Star Wars reference in it!
The big black red-eyed egg/ monsters were a bit scary
And the gay stereotyping of the pig (is spurred into action at the opening bars of "I will survive" , teased by his mother about his Streisand collection...) were a bit lame.
But definitely one for the collection.
And then last night I re-watched Beautiful Mind. Stunning.
Twas one of the "4 for a tenner" I'd picked up at the video rental place, and I'm so glad I added it to the collection too.

Clive & Sho.
I'm going to stick my neck out very far and say YES it's that good. When you've seen the film I'd love to discuss the plot elsewhere..so no spoilers for anyone else.
The special-effects were stunning, (can't say much more as I don't want to post spoilers) and the action is non-stop.
I loved Jumanji, I love Zathura more.

i took littlun to see zathura yesterday...... i was expecting 2nd rate jumanji.. but it was ok on its own merits... i wouldn't rate it at highly as jumanji.. i think jumanji is a classic....but it was enjoyable stuff with strong moral ethics about family bonding etc...
special effects were excellent and the zorgons were creepy...littlun hanging on to my arm at that part.....the 'harmless' robot was really terrifying...but cleverly integral to the plot.
its a kids film.. they'll love it and the adults won't loathe it..probably secretly enjoy it, but never admit to it, epsecially the blokes

Blues, you may call me Psycho if you like.
I'm somewhat familiar with the El Santo wrestler(s). In addition to El Santo being a sort of "underground " cult phenomenon around here, and the handful of Mexican friends I've had who were fans, I have done a *little* reading on the cultural iconography. I'd like to see more than the one film I've ever managed to see. Netflix has four- I believe I will add one or two to the queue.
I'm just really glad to hear someone else mention El Santo.
The only thing I remember thinking about "Zathura" was that I was glad when they finally released it, so we wouldn't have to see any more of the trailers.

I happened to see the trailer for "The Aristocrats", included on the "Murderball" (see above) DVD. I gotta see this movie, from IMDB:
"Comedy veterans and co-creators Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza capitalize on their insider status and invite over 100 of their closest friends--who happen to be some of the biggest names in entertainment, from George Carlin, Whoopi Goldberg, and Drew Cary to Gilbert Gottfried, Bob Saget, Paul Reiser and Sarah Silverman--to reminisce, analyze, deconstruct and deliver their their own versions of the world's dirtiest joke, an old burlesque, too extreme to be performed in public, called The Aristocrats."
The joke involves pitching a filthy show to potential producers. As an example (that might not get yiksed), Andy Dick says he comes out as Hitler, wearing crotchless panties.
My favorite line (in the trailer) is Gilbert Gottfried, in his best fingernails on the blackboard voice, apparently addressing the potential producers: "We may have to clean this up for TV ..."

Yes, the Aristocrats, I enjoyed it far better than I thought I would, I mean, eighty odd minutes for one joke. The South Park thing was hilarious and that guy doing the impression of Chris Walken was good, and the mime guy. But the main drive of the film was the constant striving to top the preceding obscentiy. Now, I'm a family man, three kids and all that and I had no problem with the stream of hilarious filth, the only thing that did make me freak was when one of the comedians started to tell the joke to his/someone's young baby.

"The Aristocrats" was a complete waste of time. Normally, dirty jokes are funny, but not in this case. Maybe it's just the fact that the joke they based the show on isn't funny in the least, I dunno. But if I can save one person from wasting their time and money on it, I've done a Very Good Thing.
Just finished watching a surprisingly good film- the Coen brothers' remake of "The Ladykillers". I hadn't expected to like it- I cannot stand Tom Hanks and the Coens are touch and go (they've got great stuff like "Blood Simple" and "Fargo", then garbage like "O Brother, Where Art Thou" ). It was really quite enjoyable.

Went to see Walk The Line last Friday. Superb film, one of the best biopics I've ever seen.
I was a little sceptical about Phoenix playing the role, but he is brilliant, as is Reese Witherspoon as June Carter. The music is, rightly, what stands out the most though. T-Bone Burnett did a great job. I'll not give anything away about the film, but the opening scene is incredible, sets up the story perfectly and draws you right in.

"Walk the Line" hasn't been released on DVD here yet. I can't wait!
Watched "I Huckabees" (finally!) last night. I liked it very much! I'd been avoiding it because Jude Law
is in it, but it was a great film and quite entertaining.
We also watched "Broken Flowers" on Tuesday night. Two thumbs up! I loved it.

Jarhead.
Very funny in places. But too long and goes nowhere really. You're sitting there waiting for it all to kick off or something majorly profound or philisophcal or interesting to happen but it doesn't.
But still a good film. Jake Gyllyfilly or whatever his name is, is good, supporting actors are good, and the gang of marines watching apocalypse now on video together and the gang of marines playing gridiron in the desert are worthy scenes. And the bugler scene at bootcamp is funny. So, it is pretty good thinking about it, but still more of a rent it on DVD and watch at home than a big screen job I would say.

That was the point I think! To convey the mind numbing boredom experienced by the soldiers in the first Gulf War. Some very funny bits yeah - loved the Darth Vader impression too! Definitely worth seeing it in the cinema I thought, the photography was stunning.

I saw "Serenity" at the weekend. Thought is was very good indeed, I liked the gender busting element (Part pirate, part sci fi, part western) and I liked the lack of big name stars. In fact I have been watching Firefly this weekend inspired by watching the film.
Desperado is next on my list of films to watch, having re-watched "El Mariachi" at xmas I have some trepidation....
