I've started watching Blood Diamond a couple of times over the weekend but my mood hasn't been grim enough!

Someone on the Glastonbury forums was just saying how good it is too. I might whack it on now, though it's getting a tad late.

GB, 'harrowing' describes Blood Diamond quite well...
It's not what you might strictly call enjoyable, but very good regardless

blood diamond is harrowing, it seems material gains are much more important than human life, whether its sparklies or oil or land..
watching it leaves you feeling sad but educated!!
we saw LADY IN THE WATER tonight.. i liked it although not as good as his other storylines.. i felt it reminded me of the 80s film COCOON..
i saw soylent green but we only have freeview so it was scrambled.. creepy film, makes you wonder??? charlton heston was in another sci fi film around that era where hes the only survivor of a plague of 'people' who can't tolerate light, so hes driving all round new york? the only being.. until the night when the white eyed infected ones try to kill him.. can't recall its name??
bet someone out there knows it!!!

.... and....
'Omega Man' was based on a novel, "I Am Legend"
... and....
"I Am Legend", starring Will Smith, is currently in production

'Omega Man' - yes, I saw that at the cinema many moons ago. Soylent Green doesn't seem quite so shocking now, the place where Edward G Robinson's character went to commit suicide, there's a place in Sweden where you can check-out, isn't there? And the traffic, well

I saw 'Children of Men' last week and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not the greatest film ever, but the documentary feel created by the extended single shot filming process really kept you in the action and involved. Attention to detail did a lot for me too, especially the London street scene near the beginning and little things like the Quietus commercial and gift boxed suicide kit. The battle scene later in the movie genuinely felt that they might have come from the midst of a real world skirmish.
I enjoyed Clive Owen's acting for the first time ever - he finally seems to have cracked it... Watching 'King Arthur' or 'Sin City', I often wondered whether Clive had been quietly replaced by a piece of plywood.

Agreed, 'Children of Men' was well-filmed and realistic-looking. I very much enjoyed it and thought Clive Owen did a good job. Making up for the travesty that was 'King Arthur'.
A couple of nights ago there was a film on BBC1 at some ungodly hour called 'Ravenous'. Every now and then I come across something that looks interesting and record it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravenous
It's basically about cannibalism. Not the easiest to stomach of all subject matters, but get over that and this film really is great. The scenery is beautiful and it is shot with an eye for atmosphere and tension - the music works well to much the same effect. There are also some genuinely funny moments in there, and perceptive bits of intelligent dialogue.
Favourite line:
The main characters are spending the night out in a tent. A man has just been wounded in his belly following a fall. Another man has just finished tending the wound. As it gets dark we suddenly hear a scream. General commotion. Someone lights a torch and the wounded man is curled up on the other side of the tent yelling 'He was *licking* me!'. Unsavoury, but entertaining .

I watched "Ray" the other night. I thought the reviews and hype at the time must have been overdoing it.
They werent they were underselling just how great the film is. It had my attention from start to finish. Sounded great but looked great too, especially the contrast in background colours between his early home and later life they really used those well.
10/10.
Then I saw "Million Dollar baby" there are lots of good things to say about this film after watching it once, but watching it twice makes it even better. You really get a feel for the pace of the boxer's or any athletes life. Slow months of training and then blinding flashes of excitment that are gone all too quickly.
10/10
Both stories have that same strand in the story of conquering your inner demons or overcoming self imposed barriers which the protagonists substitute with something more tangible till they find the strength to let go of their pasts and embrace their own identy and accept what or who they are.

Well, I watched Blood Diamond. Good, thoroughly enjoyable, but suffering from an identity crisis: it can't decide if it wants to be Hotel Rwanda or Romancing The Stone.
It might have opened some people's eyes to the diamond industry but the bullet proof DiCaprio lets it down a bit. He's good in it but has an almost Arnie like ability to avoid injury (for the most part).
Worth watching though.

Wild Hogs
A real giggle-fest throughout. Four middle-aged, (though Tim Allen is pushing the envelope on that one) guys go on a motorbike road trip. William H Macy is superb as usual. Some good visual gags, but the homo-erotic gags steal the show. John C McGinley gets the best line - "That's 4 counts of indecent exposure, 2 counts of lewd behaviour and 1 count of ....... pure jealousy!"

>> It's basically about cannibalism. <<
I'm trying to remember the name of another film about cannibalism, where the father works in some kind of lab, maybe a pathology lab at a hospital, and is always taking samples of liver or other offal home for dinner. The mother then cooks these up and describes them as "leftovers". The kid becomes increasingly suspicious, and asks "leftovers from *what*?"
Can anyone tell me what this film is called?

Right,
I've had a look on the internerd, and the closest thing I can see is a film called "parents". Still no idea whether that's right though - Oh well, back to the sulking about it.

I saw "Sunshine" yesterday (with non-sci-fi fan partner)
I *would* have enjoyed it, had I been alone, but partner kept asking what was happening, and asking me if I understood what was going on
It reminded me of another film, (I think it was called Event Horizon - sci-fi horror) although wasn't nearly as bad in the gory department.
This was not the sanitized sci-fi like Farscape and Star Trek. Beware, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. But don't blink and miss the last scene back on
I gave "Dreamgirls" the Motown biopic a miss because said partner didn't want to see it, even though I desperately wanted to, and he saw it on the plane back from Oz, and said it was quite good!
