I've just finished 'Wild Magic' by Tamora Pearce. Much better than her Lioness Quartet!
I'm reading 'Best Democracy Money Can Buy'by Greg Palast. He annoys me intensely, he's as one of my students said about Bruce Lee "very self-important" Still, I persist...

Trying to read Godel Escher Bach.....which is very good, but requires more alertness and concentration than I've got to give at 11 pm. So I might find a different time slot for that one and seek out some "comfort-reading" for bedtime.

I just finished book three of the Belgariad - Magician's Gambit by David Eddings. Will soon start book four, Castle of Wizardry.
Of course, it's really written by David and Leigh Eddings, but...

The Eddings don't write the deepest literature, there's a lot of humour in it, but it's extremely compelling. My favourites are the two prequels to the Belgariad, 'Belgarath the Sorceror' and 'Polgara the Sorceress', the autobiographies of two of the most pivotal characters, ages 7,000 and 4,500-odd respectively

Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic. Posted Sep 27, 2002
I'm reading a book that was the favourite of my (now deceased) warden at uni. I
t's called "The Prophet" by Kahil Gibran - and the story centres on a prophet called Almustapha who having been stranded for a long age on a land far from his home has become accepted and loved by the people there as a man of God. Finaly the day comes when he must leave this place and as he journeys down from the hillside over-looking the harbour to the city gates, he meets all the people from the town who ask him to speak on certain subjects like love, family, home, work, life and death. The prophet spells out his own life-philosophy and in this way the book is very spiritual. I can see now why my warden liked this book so much and how much of his style was in some way drawn from the messages contained within it.
It's quite a moving read for me therefore (albeit for more personal reasons) but I thoroughly reccomend it to anyone.
Clive.

Omy...you got all five of them (new one came out this year) It's therefore not a proper trilogy...but book four only came out about five years ago and the original trilogy stood on it's own for years and years and years (have had the three in one for so long it no longer has front or bak covers... )
I'm afraid I can't really reccomend her books for grown ups though....just a little bit boring.....
...currently reading the Antipope but Robert Rankin

Just finished Tony Parsons - One for my baby...it was a really good book, really sentimental and deep. You really will cry at some points in the book...
Hoping to get Man and Boy by the same author some time soon...

Interestingly,I read 'Belgarath' by David Eddings back in the 1980s, it's very funny as I remember, but I never got into the rest of the series.
Yesterday, I found a huge fantasy series in a 2nd hand bookshop, by a guy called Hugh Cook - I used to know him (briefly) in 1980! I feel guilty coz I have never read his books.
Presently, I am reading:
Return from Silence D Scott Rogo (about near death experiences, ironically, the last book he wrote before he was murdered in 1989) and
Wolf Speaker by Tamora Pearce

-Complete Prose by Woody Allen (AGAIN! Cos it's hilarious)
-Gates of Eden by Ethan Coen (the closest thing I'm going to get to a Coen Brothers movie for another month and a half.)
-Howard Marks Book of Dope Stories (loads of good little tales of drugs and madness, just the ticket!)
