Hey Della, I'm glad to bring some diversity into the conversation I read a lot of Italian books, of course, and many Italian authors are also translated into English.

The Joy of TeX
A Gourmet Guide to Typesetting with the AmS-TeX macro package
by M. D. Spivak, Ph.D.
The X in "TeX" makes the same sound as the ch in "loch" and the author is made up.

Reading "Becoming Human" by Ian Tattersal
Just about to start "Interface" by Neal Stephenson & Frederick George. Which has already annoyed me before I've even read page 1 because the blurb plays so heavily on Stephenson's reputation (Cryptonomicon, Snow Crash) and says not one word about Frederick George, whoever he may be. Anybody know any more?

Hi MC - long time no see. I didn't know Stephenson had a new one out - any news on the fabled 'quicksilver'?
Oh, and the George guy? Never heard of him. But I' sure we will.
I'm on The Dragon Seekers, about 18th century proto-palaeontologists, and
On Ichthyosauri and Plesiosauri by 'Mad' Thomas Hawkins. It's a copy of hte 1834 publication, and makes for some florid reading.
and
Vital Dust by Christian deDuve. It's all about per-life on Earth chemistry, and is fascinating. No, really...

Hi there Frogbit
Seeing a bit of a (not-surprising) theme emerging in your reading material
Not heard anything about quicksilver. Looks like this one I've got was written a good few years ago in the US but only just published over here. Quote on the cover from the Seattle Weekly "A Manchurian Candidate for the computer age". I'm confuzzled but will read anyway and report back here.

Always been tempted by that Pollers, never quite fumbled for the change required. You'll have to let me know what you think ...
Have just finished Mary Shelleys Frankenstein which although decidedly florid in it's style was very good ...
Just cracking into "In Exile from the Land of the Snows" an account of the Dalai Lama and Tibet since the Chinese Invasion ... nothing like a little light reading!

"i got referenced to a 1989 book by one clifford stoll called 'the cuckoo's egg' about a hacker-tracker that explains about compu-protocol, networks and the like. i'm not re-reading it now, but 'soul of a new machine' by tracy kidder is about compu-design (how the early machines were made, and by who.)"
The cuckoo's egg was quite an interesting read. On the same lines as Soul of the New Machine - Hackers by Steven Levy [sp?] is a good one.
Just finished Chasm City - very good stuff. I'm stuck without a book at the moment.
Liam.
