'Culloden' by John Prebble, which is about the battle and its aftermath. I was amazed to find that the battle only lasted about 30 minutes!
I'm also having a second try at 'Madame Bovary' by Gustave Flaubert. I *still* think the woman's a drip.

It is isn't it! I keep coming back to them when I've not got much time to read, but want to read 'something'.

I'm on my annual walz through Ivanhoe, my favourite novel ever.
Also I'm reading the Guns Germs & Steel thing (Amazon were kind enough to send it to me off my whish list - how many of you knew that they do a monthly draw and send one or more lucky people a pressie?)
I'm also reading the sequel to Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave (for the life of me I can't think what it's called)
and I just read all 8 books in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. And I have to say for light reading they're excellent.
I'm going on holiday next week and I'm taking LOTR and the Silmarillion for company.

I have just about finished the first Volume of the Forsyte Saga which is brilliant and very very readable. So readable in fact I have the second volume in my bag.

Just starting 'The Man Who Was Thursday' by G. K. Chesterton, which is worth reading just for the title alone!

Brothers by Julian F. Thompson. So far it's very 'interesante'. I have also just read The Only Alien on The Planet, which funnily enough has nothing to do with aliens. I couldn't put it down.

Am positively devouring Mr Pullmans Dark Materials as if they're going out of fashion ... started Northern Lights last tuesday, inhaled The Subtle Knife and have just started the Amber Spyglass ... should probably start thinking about the next excitement ... any recommendations.
Isn't Clan of the Cave Bear great? The others are pretty good too ... haven't got around to reading the latest installment as yet - seeing as the hardback is the size of a small village I think I'll wait until it's out in paper back!

'Expecting Someone Taller' by Tom Holt having just my way through 'Who's Afraid of Beowulf?'
I thought the Mary Stewart trilogy was very good.
