Babe Among the Stars - June 2009
Apologies that there wasn't a column from me a fortnight ago; I went to the London meet and though I was due to return home on Post deadline day I had an accident and was unable to write my column. There's a SPAM email doing the rounds about an upcoming 'astronomical event' on 27 August when 'the planet Mars will be so close it will appear as large as the full moon in our sky'. It's rubbish. Don't forward it to your friends, please.

Venus is now a 'morning star' and is partnered with Mars before dawn the whole month. If you know your constellations, they're both in Aries, which will no doubt give astrologers something exciting to talk about.
- 07: Antares (alpha Scorpii) 0.6° south of Moon (occultation from the USA)
- 07: Full Moon (the Strawberry Moon and the Honey Moon)
- 13: Neptune and Jupiter 3° south of Moon
- 15/16: June Lyrids meteor shower maximum
- 16: Uranus 6° south of Moon
- 19: Venus 2° south of Mars; and 8° south of Moon
- 19: Mars 6° south of Moon
- 21: Summer Solstice (Northern Hemisphere)/Winter Solstice (Southern Hemisphere)
- 21: Mercury 7° south of Moon
- 22: New Moon
- 22: Mercury 3° north of Aldebaran (alpha Tauri)
- 28: Saturn 7° north of Moon
