That is amazing!
In Germany today on google.de (10 March) they are celebrating the 225th birthday of Joseph von Eichendorff. (A German Romantic poet, making him a contemporary of Wordsworth, Coleridge, William Blake et al)

Indeed. Clicking on the iPhone (Guide) keypad.
That's where I saw the Vogon kill the plant.
Fitting that the first country to post this new doodle
is Australia. Especially when one remembers what Douglas
had to say about that continent:

Hovering the cursor over the door on the left makes it open. Unfortunately, it doesn't say "thank you". At least not in English.

If you click away for long enough: Vogon eats plant, first dolphins, then mice explain the universe, the innumerable uses of a
, the babel fish
and Deep Thought comes up with "42".

The Vogon isn't eating the plant, he's reciting poetry to it.

Marvin is hiding behind the sliding door.
Which seems to have a mind of its own.
And I just found the 'speaker' button on the consul
which adds a lot of sound effects to the actions.
The 'magnify' icon just takes you to a lot of DNA references
- among which I must sadly report there are no links to h2g2.com

I can't access the door on my touchscreen tablet. I'll have to check it out on my laptop upstairs. I guess I better go do it now as the day might be ending soon in Oz.

Anyone know what the "meter" behind the teacup is referring?
My word! - have you seen the new Google Doodle, what?
~ jwf ~ scribblo ergo sum Posted Mar 10, 2013
Or that tall cylindrical thing beside it?
A thermos of tea perhaps.
The day will end in OZ but the same doodle has been
designated as 'international' according to something
I read somewhere and it should be appearing everywhere
as the midnight hour passes into Mar 11, Douglas' birthdate.
(Though by my watch it's now past 12-GMT and google.co.uk
is still not showing it.)

Not midnight in uk yet - we don't shift to summer time for a few weeks yet. Don't panic.
It IS cool though, isn't it?

I think the meter thing might be a sub-ether radio, and the cylinder the electronic thumb. Or were they the same thing? Deary me. I forget.

If you look carefully, you'll notice that it's not a large gold brick. It's actually a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick.
