My word! - have you seen the new Google Doodle, what?

There's a Canada-only google today honouring
the lowly penny which will be no longer be
made or circulated by banks. The will begin
taking them out of circulatiion today.
google.ca
or
google.ca/ncr
Maybe in the morning there'll be a link to
a google explanation page but for now here's
the news story:

I wonder how many Canadian pennies ended up in my pocket over the years. It's so similar in shape and color to the US penny that we often don't notice that we got the wrong one.

Mary Leakey (and a couple of frolicking dalmations).

Hmm... maybe you're getting a country redirect.

Very strange. At first I thought maybe it was a Commonwealth thing, but even Google Mexico shows the Leakey doodle. And it can't be just a time zone thing because Google.ca has it. But https://www.google.com/ will not show me the doodle.

Try http://www.google.com/ncr
I don't know if this will make a difference, but it's something.

Nope. no doodle there either. Google Russia, Hong Kong, Canada, UK, Mexico are the ones I've checked so far and they all have the doodle. But not google.com.
On two machines.
I don't think I'm having a country redirect as every country to which I might be redirected has the doodle. It's just not on .com.

I've got it on the French Google, if that's any help.

from here it looks like it's on every national google except the US, which is google.com. Does anyone besides me find it missing from google.com?

Superfrenchie Posted Feb 6, 2013
I don't have it on google.com.
What I find odd, though, is that the logo says "Google" (ok, that's usual), and then it also has, in smaller letters, "français". I don't remember it doing that before?

I called one of my colleagues a ninja yesterday. Do you think the real ninjas have tracked me down?!

>> francais <<
Sounds like you're getting .ca where there is always
a francais/english button. click it and see it goes
french - note the country suffix - then click on the
english option which should be where the francais was.
Check the country suffix again. Is it .ca or .com?
That's the usual fr/eng button we have on .ca
because we are officially and legally bilingual
I can't get the US .com version either but this
has been true for a while. It's like .ca has
become the default for US .com when outside the
US and it even shows it as being .com but it aint
the real McCoy, sorta.
There's some sorta international security firewall
carp going on lately. The US ncr has been shut off.

Nope, it's not a button.
The "Français" is part of the logo picture, nicely nestled under the "le" of Google.
Then the buttons are in French (Recherche Google, J'ai de la chance), and buttons/links at the very bottom and at the very top are in French too.
The French Google page used to offer to send me to "Google.com in English", but now it only offers "Google.com", so maybe they've changed something?
