Yes, has Hawking said anything about if a ship with warp engines could escape a black hole?

high gravity fields distort space which would collapse a warp field.smiley - ufo

but thats just a continuity problem, that can be by-passed by re routing the main power supply throught the dampening buffers located in the jefferies tubes on deck 3 then reversing the polarity of the tachyon flowsmiley - rocket

Well it seems noone wants to comment on Whiskey's Star Trek thread on ask so it's good to see some comments here.

I actually quite disliked Simon Pegg's Scotty. Too much of a comedy turn for my tastes. I know James Doohan was a ham (who wasn't in TOS? smiley - winkeye) but it was over the top for me.

Aside from that though....

Need I say more. Brilliant stuff and yes, the odd numbered film curse has been definitively purged.

As for the black hole thing. There is a book called the Science of Star Trek out there somewhere. If you want to quibble about the physics in Star Trek there are many many problems going on - it's not really hard Sci-Fi you know smiley - winkeye

Ah I appear to have not put any spoiler's in the above so sorry for the erroneous warning. Draft 1 of my post contained dreadful spoilers so I deleted them.

I watched Vantage Point last night. A US president gets shot and the story unfolds from varying perspectives, each shedding a bit more light than the last. Pretty good I thought; it's pretty short so no extraneous bits, but not brilliant either.

I would suggest people watch Yes Man and the Boy In The Striped Pyjamas but not bother with the other.

The imagery and drama are better in the last one. It should be shown in history classes.

Well, Star Trek was... on average, not bad. Poor start, mediocre middle, but then found its feet towards the end and really got good.

If they had condensed the first hour into twenty minutes, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Chase scenes with giant red animals, for example, could have been cut with zero impact on the plot. There wasn't really enough plot to fill two hours, anyway.

Did anyone else spot that all of the actors are TV actors? It smelt an awful lot like a pilot episode. I'm not complaining though; if it continued in the feel that the film ended with, it has definite potential.

Finally, I agree that Kirk and, in honesty, most of the cast, were too young to have the positions they do aboard the flagship of the fleet. Just... no.

But still. Mr Vip and I came out un-disappointed. And for a Star Trek film, that's pretty good going.

Watched Sommersturm/Summer Storm last night.

Fairly average German gay coming-of-age movie, but it had a fantastic soundtrack and some really good acting. Some brilliantly shot scenes as well.

Recommended.

I saw Vantage Point also last night.

I'll give it a more positive review than someone above gave it. A really quite jolly romp it was, if a little implausible at times.

I think it was at its best when it dropped the rewinding stuff of the different 'vantage points' but then the end may not have worked without that stuff at the beginning and it was certainly a relatively novel concept for me at least.
Even a good plot twist thrown in there at one point. Good cast too.

Definitely worth a watch. smiley - ok

Just got back from seeing Star Trek. My word what a film!

It looked incredible, every single design choice was spot on: the Jellyfish was a gorgeous little ship and the Neranda was truly the stuff of nightmares. The opening sequence was a fantastic statement of intent the rest of the film lived up to.

Karl Urban was brilliant, as was Simon Pegg, and Spock's farewell have me laughing my head off.

Not perfect by any stretch - the Nokia phone in the car really smiley - bleeped me off - but probably in line to be one of the films of the year.

More please.

Best 3D yet.

A story. A moral. Lovely characters. Looked great and (bearing in mind that this 3D stuff is gimmicky) not too gimmicky.

I understand that it was made in stop-motion, but looked much more like it was CGI.

And I,ve got (another) pair of cool glasses.

Sho - I found this page:
http://www.kino.de/kinofilm/star-trek/imkino/104712.html
has a very clear overview of what movie plays where and when in the original. (For example Star Trek plays in Flensburg - about 80km from here - but only on mondays smiley - doh No way I would have found out without this page!)
