Strictly Ballroom.
It's wonderful when a film you are sharing with your children because you remember it as being a brilliant film, even though you haven't watched it for over a decade, turns out to still be brilliant, and also one that they enjoy

Ibrahim and the Flowers of Q'ran.
Omar Sharif plays the role of a shopkeeper in a small and assorted shop. He has a friend, Moses, a Jew teenager. Omar is like a loving father to him. Omar is a muslim sufi, a mystical stream of Islam.
He lives his religion in a very personal and calm way.
They live in a poor street of Paris, around the 60s. The music, a lot of brilliant songs, is from that epoch. It serves like a balm for the many moving moments of the film that make you feel like to cry.
From the point of view of aesthetics, it is just sublime: the light, the streets of Paris, the landscape in Turkey...
Omar Sharif is huge in that film. YOu want to hug him and the teenager. A tender film, full of meaningful words, beauty and deep feelings. I cried a lot.
I would use that film in a class of ethics for teenagers or adults.

Rocknrolla
Free preview screening last week, as it's not out yet. I think the poster says Geezers, Guns and Guy Richie. Well you won't be disappointed, it does what it says on the can. I enjoyed it, plenty to laugh at, plot wasn't too complicated to follow. Like a grittier episode of Hustle.

I rented Son of Rambow the other day. LMAO The french exchange student and what he does to the film the boys are making was worth the price of the ticket.
The boys mothers story made me weep. How does cruelty get institutionalized in the name of religion?

I just browsed my local supermarket's DVD Bargain Bucket (2 for £5) and surfaced with the sci-fi "The Fountain" (Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz) and The Guru (a comedy) so I'll report back as soon as they've been watched

Saw the Dark Knight. Stunning. Ledger for posthmous oscar. His performance...and the writing of course was amazing. As was the appearance of the Batbike..which I won't go into as I don't want to spoil it but it was sublime.
Hellboy II - excellent fun. Luke Goss was impressive again as he was in Blade II. The set-pieces were OTT as required for such a comic book movie and the music for the end credits nailed it for me. Del Toro must have been in hysterics when the idea was hatced for that.
It all bodes well for The Hobbit.

Dark Knight, at last. Very enjoyable, but too much daylight for a Batman film. Bale's Bat-voice is laughable, but Dent's descent into Two-Face made it for me.

Forrest Gump. Again. This time with the children watching. We all really enjoyed it. This having children malarky is good fun when it comes to sharing films.
And I discovered that I have a bawling buddy - Sic, like me, managed to mostly hold it in until Forrest breaks down at Jenny's grave, and then we both 'd our eyes out.
Nod and DH were completely dry-eyed

I saw Zodiac last week. It's about the hunt for a serial killer, over about 8-10 years. It focuses on the people hunting him, their obsessiveness in finding evidence etc more than being a Silence of the Lambs type thingy. Not bad.

Held out for about half of There Will Be Blood then switched it off.
Can anyone tell me:
1) is it actually about anything?
2) when does it happen?

"Son of Rambow". It was really cute! I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I'd anticipated. Laughed out loud at some bits.

Paris, Je T'aime. 18 short stories by different directors, all set in the city of love. I got it for its Coen Brothers constituent (which is very good), but enjoyed pretty much all of it.
Features - Steve Buscemi, Juliette Binoche, Marianne Faithfull, Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhall, Elijah Wood, Gerard Depardieu, Bob Hoskins, Willem Defoe, and beaucoup des autres.

I'd thought about seeing "Paris, J'Taime". Will add it to the queue.
We've watched all of Series 2 & 3 of Doctor Who this last week, playing catch-up. So now we can watch some actual movies again.

Re-watched "The Dark Knight"...
Think I agree with some earlier comments that Eckhart quietly steals the show with his Dent....
Key: Complain about this post
