Just finished Casino Royale.

Two great British films in two days. smiley - wow

I reckon all those people who started the anti Daniel Craig websites must have felt pretty silly when watching Casino Royale as it is tip top.

Watched "Lebenszeichen" ("Signs of Life"), by Werner Herzog, on DVD last night. He's one of my favorite directors; this was his first film. Atmospheric, and really good.

Rented 'Children of Men' last night - first time I've seen it since the cinema. I love this movie and had forgotten how fascinating those long tracking shots were. smiley - bigeyes

Saw Hot Fuzz yesterday. Is it me or was there one Hell of a homoerotic strand running through it?

Isn't that the case in nearly every 'buddy cop' movie ever made?

(with the possible exception of 'Freebie and the Bean', which is so aggressively hetero you just know they have to be gay.)

I think there is... some of the 'offical' (i.e. said by Simon Pegg or t'other bloke) stuff I've seen/read has mentioned "a little bit romance" and the only 'romance' I could see was the unspoken stuff between the two leads.

I think it's a genre riff on their part - see under Bad Boys 1 + 2 and particularly the homoerotic posturings of 2 Fast 2 Furious for which Harry Knowles memorably proposed the "will they/won't they kiss" drinking game.

I finally saw "Fight Club", thanks to a NetFlix subscribing friend (none of the local rental places have it for some reason). I'll have to agree with the IMDB voters who put it at #31 on the best movie lists. Rather than the review books I looked at, which give it thumbs down. Brad Pitt is, well, Brad Pitt, but Edward Norton makes the movie as the everyman cubicle escapee who takes a walk on the wild side.

I have to say, tho, that the IMDB category "Crime/Drama/Thriller" is not what I would pick, but rather "Comedy/Crime/Thriller" like "Snatch":

Narrator: [about the soap {made with human fat stolen from liposuction centers}] Tyler sold his soap to department stores at $20 a bar. Lord knows what they charged. It was beautiful. We were selling rich women their own fat asses back to them.

You're right about Fight Club. Edward Norton is perfect in the role. The only problem is that once you see it you know what's going to happen at the end. The problem with plot twists like that is that you never get to relive them in the same way again. Whenever I come across an unexpected/confusing twist in a film I think: savour this, because this is the only time you will get this feeling watching this film.
