Isaac Newton did some cool stuff.
Among other things, he invented the cat flap.
While he was studying the physical properties of light, his beloved pet cat would nudge her way into his darkened room often ruining his experiments, so he cut a small hole in the door and covered it with felts so she could come in to be with him without disturbing his studies.

When viewing the footage of Neil Armstrong's historic first "step" on the moon, most people don't see the actual "STEP". When Armstrong said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."* was NOT when he dropped down from the ladder. It was after he had done that, then "leaped" back up to the bottom rung (about 3.5 feet high... his landing was so soft that the lander's legs did not fully compress) and then back down to the bottom again. He was standing on the foot pad of the lander during those visually memorable maneuvers.
He made his famous quote when he placed his left foot just off of the lander's foot pad. It was truly a small step.
*whether he meant to say "a man" or just "man" is another very lengthy and rather tired discussion.

Gojira (Godzilla) was originally to be a giant gorilla/whale monster. The name is a portmanteau of the words 'gorira' (gorilla) and 'kujira' (whale).
The story of Gojira was inspired by a true incident where a Japanese fishing boat, The Lucky Dragon, was contaminated when it strayed to close (but still in the official "safe zone") to an American nuclear test at Bikini atoll.

H. Rider Haggard wasn't impressed by R. L. Stevenson's Treasure Island. He made a 5 shilling bet that he could write a better book. The result was King Solomon's Mines, which was a runaway success.
