So England's world cup dream of '02 ends with with a rather sorry whimper, not even a bang.
I feel desperately sorry for Seaman, who has kept us in more games than most of the rest of the team have had dinners, and who might reasonably have expected that his fellow players might have managed to score at least one goal against a team as poor defensively as any of the eight teams left.
And, while I'm at it, *what* was that red card all about? Terrible decision.
USA played the best football of the day without ever actually looking like they could hit the back of the net.
Just have to hope that the Spaniards can put one over on the Germans, I guess.

Uncle Heavy [sic] Posted Jun 22, 2002
the red card was an instant sending off ofence. even for a mistake, its a potentially career threatening mistake. you are carded like that to stop doping rash studs on ankle tackles like that.

Fair enough.
My Guardian this morning seems to disagree, but I know not the latest FIFA rulings so I'll shut up now.

Witty Ditty Posted Jun 22, 2002
I agree - it was a dangerous and unecessary tackle. Ronaldhinio wasn't aiming for the ball, he was aiming for the ankles.
If the ref *hadn't* sent him off - that would have been controversial.

i dont think he was going out to injure danny, but it was unforgivably dangerous. shows what you get for believing the guardian really...

It was horribly career-threatening, I agree. It was the same with the Portuguese player whose name escapes me... but who was sent off for an equally career-threatening tackle in their match against Korea.
Oh, and Joao Pinto - that bloke who tried to snog the ref in pleading after the sending off, has been suspended indefinitely.

joao pinto was sent off for a dreadful challenge. couto, the guy trying to snog the ref, is not an issue, it would seem...

Come on Korea, it's up to you to stop the inidious Germans now...
Two more disallowed goals <laugh. just keeps getting bloody worse, doesn't it?
Mind you, if they do make the final, it'll be nice for the opposition, because playing in Tokyo will be like a home game against Korea...

Researcher 188007 Posted Jun 22, 2002
...obviously the ref didn't see it that way.
It's great that South Korea are in the semis and I'm very happy for them. But it seems that there's an unofficial rule preventing their opposition from scoring goals...

*sobs* Goodbye, Senegal...
It starts to get really loud here, many, many people from Turkey living here in Frankfurt... anyway, good luck to them

What a sorry collection of diabolical refereeing decisions we have seen in this World Cup so far.
And as for FIFA - not suspending Rivaldo for something he should have been red carded for (automatic 1 match ban) was poor, dishing out referee and assistant referee appointments to Blatter suproting confederations is absolutely corrupt - most of these guys are not up to officiating an English Division 3 game (on their performances to date) far less a World Cup game.
Whilst I do not believe in conspiracy theories...................
Anyway well done to the 4 semi-finalists it looks like it will be a Brazil win again.

It definetly looks like it will be a Brazil WC, but with the way that South Korea has been getting disallowed goals for the opposition, who knows? All I know is that i DO NOT want Germany to win, or make it to the finals for that matter.

Here (in Denmark), Ronaldinho's tackle was certainly not seen as something you could get a direct red card for. And if he should have that, Beckham certainly should have seen a yellow for diving for a penalty...
Ultimately, though I do agree that England played well, was very well organised and put all their hearts into it, I think they dropped out because they could not create goals. 4 goals scored in the last two matches sound fine - but three of them was dead giveaways from the opponents defense (2 of which, I'm still sad, by my own side).
I'm happy to see two to three teams playing attack football - Brazil, Turkey and possibly South Korea (didn't see their last two games) - being in the semifinals. The 8-9 players behind the ball, get one goal and that's it kind of style just isn't the football I like to see...

I thought Ronaldinho looked more like one of the extras from Planet of the Apes.
*still upset at England's exit but her sportsmanship will return*

Does anybody know, if Collinas is to be the ref in one of the semis or in the final? Would love to see him once again, before he's retiring as a ref.
