minichessemouse - Ahoy there me barnacle!

i was finally persuaded to try this infamous substance a fwe days ago, and to be honest i wasnt sure whether or not i liked it, i expected a more polarised reaction, people are supposed to love or hate the stuff.

so hootoo am i the only one sitting on the marmite fence so to speak, do you all hold strong opinions on the gloopy loooking substance that people spread on toast?

opinions on similar substances to marmite may be aired (veggimite and the likes)

I'm the same. I think I'm an anomaly to the advertisers because I am entirely indifferent to Marmite. I like it, in the sense that I will eat it, but I rarely if ever do.

This substance can make me renounce all form of British cooking.

I was once told that no one exposed to this goo after the age of three will ever find it edible. I can believe this.

Yes I was brought up on marmite.....and I still absolutely love it, with lurpak butter, on toast, for maximum pleasure.

But I wouldn't exactly describe it as 'British cooking' smiley - laugh

Love it. Marmite soldiers dunked into a soft boiled egg - there is no taste like it! My other fave is a smear of marmite on a rice cracker (or other suitably bland base layer) topped with thinly sliced tomatoes. smiley - drool

Secretly Not Here Any More

It's fantastic stuff. And it also adds an interesting sort of "umami" taste to things like stews and sauces.

I'm actually eating Marmite breadsticks as I type.

I wasn't fond of the champagne marmite - in fact I've still got a half-finished jar.

I did very much enjoy the Guinness marmite, though.

Vegemite disappoints me. It's not as potent as proper marmite.

Although, having said that, these are very nice:

I'm another who neither loves nor loathes it. I quite like it, but I don't eat it daily (or even monthly).

I tried the champagne marmite - there was enough of a taste to know that there was wine in it, but it just succeeded in making both the marmite and the wine taste like there was something wrong with them.

Marmite is nice on hot buttered toast. The marmite substitutes are nice too and cheaper.

I'm quite fond of Marmite. With apologies to the Antipodeans, Vegemite is a poor substitute.
