Gnomon - time to move on

I agree. The best way we all can help is to write entries and submit them to Peer Review. I've 20 in the pipeline at the moment.

But don't write them using Pliny as it is likely to fiddle with the GuideML to make unreadable or completely erase them. Use Brunel or Alabaster or Classic Goo.

I've just created a guide entry, using the NaJoPoMo I've finished.
http://h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A87864097?s_fromedit=1

I don't expect to submit it for the Guide, but who knows? It took a lot of research to cover things worth seeing in the cities visited. I learned a lot of different types of transportation. No matter how unlikely you might consider yourself for things like hang gliding or skateboarding, there are professionals who can help you get up to speed. And every city worth visiting has tour guides by the score.

I personally have been to many cities, and have enjoyed the expertise of tour guides. Okay, so only one trip [To Manhattan in 2001] was taken in the month of November, but even at that time of year there are cities in tropical or subtropical areas [or the southern hemisphere] where it's warm enough for outdoor sightseeing...

It's fiction, paulh, so in its current form it's not something for the Edited Guide (factual stuff), but it would be good for the Post or any of the alternative guides (if any of those are still active). Dmitri will advise.

It occurs to me that, while people are asking what they can do, I could point out that contentwise:

*tomorrow will begin a NEW Create Challenge, which you can all help with.
* The Post would LOVE to have pictures for the Caption Challenge. See something unusual? Have your mobile handy? Send us the pictures, and see what quips others come up with. Remember: they have to be pictures we can legally show on h2g2. (i.e., your own, with no nudity or illegal activity going on. smiley - winkeye)

Thanks!

tech' problems will always be around in one way or another, ever since the beeb ripped h2g2 to shreds to get "their" bits out, we have to live with that and hope tech' geniuses can sort things out over a period of timesmiley - smiley

But! as for volunteers, how many have "we" lost through infighting and jockeying for "position" etc ? and that's been a question I've asked for years - smiley - sadfacestop the squabbling!
and now we're running out of volunteers for the "office" side of hootoo

Dmitry, I know you aren't ready for this yet, but when you *are* ready, take a look at my recap and summary of the NaJoPoMo: http://h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F69196?thread=8315107 This will be much easier to read through, and maybe it can go ten days at a time or whatever you want.

MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship.

I too wish I could offer assistance. I was removed from the Trello account as a photographer as I didn't use it. But I never understood it so couldn't.

And with my current health, social, and domestic situation I'm currently out of the loop but hope to be back soon.

Reguarding post #29 - through postings, I gather that some volunteers resigned their hats. Of course, their code of ethics and oath of confidentiality ensures that no-one outside of the inner circles know true details. smiley - winkeye

In the end though, there is rarely a shortage of volunteers. Many who don't have ambitions of being big smiley - fishsmiley - hsif in a little pond. And find themselves coming up short in one fashion or another.

Life will go on, and perhaps in a little more time, the site will find itself less divided and more welcoming to everyone.

Well, h2g2 has always been a special place for me.

So, thankyou to everyone who has kept it going over the years.

I'm wary of internet relating. I'm not very young, and not a natural with internet culture. smiley - senior. smiley - rofl However, for h2g2 I have always made an exception.

So thankyou for that. smiley - kiss

As for contribution. hmm. Well ...

I'm not able to write for Peer Review, I just don't have the brain type, being a bit eccentric and arty smiley - rofl, but h2g2 has always been very accepting of different brain types, I think, and I've flourished so much, creatively, over the twelve or so years I've been here.

And I've contributed to the Post over the years, with stories and photos, and keeping a journal has always been encouraged as a contribution.

I've always loved meeting really interesting people from all over the world, and having some great conversations! This has been an essential part of h2g2 experience!

smiley - coffee

I've lived in communities, and I know from experience that there are always problems with the day to day running of a group. Especially the hassles over the washing up. And the housework. But we don't need to do washing up, online. smiley - rofl.

However, I guess even online communities run into problems sometimes, and I truly hope it all works out.

h2g2! Here's a kiss for you. smiley - kiss

I couldn't help with H2G2's housework even if I wanted to. My own house needs too much work as it is [and since I neglect that, where would I find the time to do housework elsewhere? smiley - winkeye]

heheh. Funnily enough, when I first joined hootoo, way back when, I was so enchanted by the rather extraordinary and magical company I was keeping, I kept putting off the housework, and our flat was a geeky mess. smiley - rofl The computer keyboard was lurking under empty coke cans and takeaway cartons. Sweep aside yesterday's unwashed breakfast bowl, I must talk to my people! Well, I exaggerate a bit. About the breakfast bowl.

I still think hootoo is magical, although my own life is moving in new directions, and I don't check in as much as I used to. I'm still quite addicted though, I don't deny it, I like to see what's happening. smiley - rofl

Every community has to keep changing and growing and moving, I think. It's like being in a band, perhaps. There are certain creative heydays, certain constellations of people, then the pattern changes and new patterns form.

smiley - coffee

I think the EG is amazing. I've always been in awe of the wonderful writers who have graced this site.

I miss the AWW. I'd contribute to helping to get it up and running again, but I lack the skills needed to offer quality critique. I couldn't offer what people needed.

Actually, I miss those aliens who abducted me, when I first joined. What were they called? The CCC .. something? They were a group of people who hovered over the AWW and selected the writings that were too nutty even for the AWW. smiley - rofl They'd leave a message in one's PS, that one's writing had been selected, and I think it turned up in the Post or somewhere? Amazing honour it was. smiley - rofl I'll never forget them.

When I say I miss them, see above paragraph about how communities must grow and change and move on.

I'm just really glad I found this site. These days I still keep a journal, and chat to amazing and wonderful people.

And onward!

Better go hoover our house now. heheh.

OK checking out of this conversation, because I think this posting might be in the wrong place. Sorreeee. smiley - kiss

I've been long-absent, but popping back in now I'm glad to see the site is in good hands and has a future. I miss the time I used to spend here, and hope that as time goes on I find more time to spend here.

To that end, regardless of the time I have available, I'd be willing to pay a modest membership or subscription fee, or to contribute to a crowdfunding event to support the site's continued existence (and perhaps a mobile-friendly platform). There's something comforting about knowing it's here, even when I'm not.
