WHICH, WHAT, WHERE, WHOM?
A sea-serpent? Erm, keep it company for a while, will you? And then tell me where it's at, okay Floh?
AGB! Good to see you! Choose any cabin you like (just press the "discuss-button" on the front page), just make sure the number hasn't been taken yet, okay?
Be back later!

Captain,
I have a nautical question.
Why is the title "... abaft the beam"? Abaft the beam, un-qualified, is simply astern.
I thought you only used abaft the beam qualified by something like "how many points abaft the beam did she steer?" or "show a white light from ahead to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam ".
Are you sure you're qulaified to sail this thing? Force twelve is after all, a hurricane.
Awu

Very astute observation, Ausna. I am Mr. Christopher, here to help you when the Captain is out. Do you need a cabin?

Yes - maybe. I just go to the head of the Forum Thread and assign myself a number, right? Or can you do it for me?

I will try to answer this Ausnahmsweise (there's a pun you don't see every day )
According to my dictionary the english expression for "a wind that comes sort of diagonally from behind" is "abaft the beam".
I was uncertain about it too, but what is a poor, illitterate, dyslexic and non-english pirate to do - apart from suggesting anyone who questions my authority - and ability to steer this ship through *any* storm - to take a flying leap from the plank.

Very nicely put Captain.

See - that's what I meant - that "sort of diagnally ..." bit. So it's not quite astern. That can be dangerous - watch out - you're going to gibe!!!!!!!!!
P.S. You're not English. Are you German? (you understood my name). Would Raumschotts mean anything to you?

Doesn't Raumschotts mean 'space bulkhead' or something similar?

Gibe? Are you gibing at me?
If you sail like *I* do with *this* ship there is nothing to be afraid of. We'll sail with loose sheets if we really *must* - but we can also beam up or submerge or jump to another time/space/dimension - you name it - if need be. This really *is* a most versatile vessel, you know?
I'm not german as such - and never have been - but I have been known as a "borderline kraut" because I was *born* in Germany (and grew up there too). Not that it matters much to me these days. I have relatives in most parts of the world (not to mention friends) and besides I don't believe in borders, nationalism, racism, sexism, insectism or whatever people want to poison there minds with.

It appears as though you have another potential victim...I mean crew member, Cap'n Pierce!

By the way, I've dropped in to see if there's some more coffee stowed aboard. Everywhere seems to be running a bit dry of the front and at this rate, I'm going to have to start drinking or even worse !

Ecky the carpenter reporting back for duty. Sorry about Mr Andrews, glad to see you got him out. I've been in the ships infirmary for a few days, nasty rash err I mean virus.

Oh crap, where am I now? Oh well, better make the best of it...
Any chance of a job, o piratey-types? My main skills are reading papers, making sarcastic comments and appearing from nowhere in bursts of incredibly expensive-looking special effects.
