I'm jealous. I *want* one of those.
What is grade 7/8? Is that like Suzuki (which I don't do) or ASTA ratings (American String Teachers' Association, which rates some pieces for difficulty) I play level 4/5 from them. Like Massenet-Meditation and Accolay-Concerto in A minor
(I play violin, by the way)
Ever played Bartok violin duets? Very much folk music. Songs that he collected. Actally Bartok that is fun to play

I probably don't know what I'm getting myself into, but... here it goes.
Calling all Bartok fans? Do we want to write an article about him -"the man and his music"? If so, drop me a line. And if you have experience writing collaborative entries please help. This will be my first.

bartok fans unite! i have absolutely *no experience* writing collab, but heck, there's always a first time... i'm not sure how well it would work out, but i suppose when we recruit enough ppl we could get together and discuss the mainframe (what we'd like in the article), and then have one or two doing each section... would that help? or have everybody search for data, put it in point form, and have the most eloquent of us string them up into something coherent?
btw, imho, bartok's dances in bulgarian rhythm are a blast! although of course, my #1 favourite bartok piece is still 'from the diary of a fly', the reason being that 90% of the ppl i play it for *hate* it. (it's as much fun to play as shostakovich, and has loads more humour. my mother lamented that this was the 'reward' she got after years of sending me for piano classes )

well, you've got one up on me. I haven't written *any* type of entry before. I left messages for the following people, who, at one point in time, mentioned they liked Bartok. But I don't think most of them have been on the guide too recently...you, arwen, JaggedLittleGrl, erostratus, Rocky. Maybe we wait a week to see if anyone else shows up, and then start anyways?
I will have to look up these pieces. I haven't heard of them before. But, true to Bartok, I'm sure they will sound really cool but be really hard to play.
Oh, and I left you a note at your personal space about this project...

well, it helps if you have a twisted sense of humour . especially when playing 'diary'.
yeah, got the message yesterday, but when i tried to post it, connection went bye-byes and refused to come back. (i just posted a reply, btw) i fully agree with you that we should wait a week to see who else come on board - anyway, i still have one other article to finish this week!!!

'Lo Danny,
I would like to become an official member of the Guild - I've been lurking for far too long!
1. I play the piano (fairly decently) and the guitar (rather less decently), and I used to play the bass recorder (more fun than it sounds!) and the violin. I also spent a year or two singing with the London Symphony Chorus. I would like to learn the cello, and the turntables - as a scratch DJ though - none of yer techno rubbish!
2. I'm not a particular fan of Bartok (due to ignorance of his music) but I am a big fan of the other B's - Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Berlioz, Bshostakovich, Bmozart etc. I have a curious fetish for the counter tenor voice as well. As far as music written after 1960 is concerned, I like John Adams, 60s and 70s rock in general, 90s metal, hip hop (old skool...), funk. I'm enjoying the whole bhangra-hiphop fusion thing because it's fresh and funky. Oh, and I like some of the singer-songwriter types as well: Tom Waits, Harry Nilsson, Bob Dylan. And Lalo Schifrin has a little corner in my music collection too, for those camp moments.
3. Ooo, I don't know. Some interesting conversations! I would hate to have a static music collection and I'm always on the lookout for cool new stuff, or cool old stuff that I've missed.

Hi Gubernatrix
For some reason I thought you were already a member! Must be getting confused in my old age
Anyway, you are *now* a fully-fledged, official member of the Guild, and can wear the badge with pride: A434648
NB Bartok is not compulsory

im a pianist play both classical and jazz. one of the qualities of my playing is getting a very delicate tasty sound out of the strings. one thing i dont understand is say like kissin (bbc4 other day) lacks consistancy when he plays. like the fugue. u couldn't follow the lines.
i think fav. classical for me i would say bach chopin debussy and ravel.
jazz is prob. coltrane shorter and davis. but jazz pianists would have to be tyner hancock bill evans loads of others tho. i try to learn things from each new pianist i hear. but i think i learnt the most from those three. theres no type of music i dont like though. i find pastiche boring. people should try to make as much new stuff as poss. mr scruff is good cos he doesnt take himslef to seriously. i like that.
im very interested to find out some more about tony williams. i think he was the most talented drummer the world ever saw. i have searched for someone better but ive never heard anyone who came near that kind of telepathy and musicianship.
please let me join!!! !

Since being caught up in the Bartok onslaught a few posts ago, I've been to the shops and purchased a Bartok CD (the piano concertos and violin concerto) to see what all the damn fuss is about!!
It's grooooovy!

Brushing aside the ever-increasing list of Bartoks...
Hello Mark, and welcome to the Guild
There is a badge at A434648 that you can add to your personal space.
And as for Bartok the Bat, you can be an honorary member of the Guild, what with you not being a real Researcher and all

Hi there,
I play Blues harp, and Guitar. I Love Blues music, and often Jam with varuious local musicians, in fact, if there is a band on ANYWHERE I am, i try and sit in with them. Ive played Guitar since I was 12, and im approaching 40 now,(You can do the maths!!) and ive played Harp for about 6 years. I wish id done it the other way round, as Ive found Im better on the harp than guitar!!
My favorite musicians are Little Walter (Muddy Waters Harp Player) Junior Wells, Charile Musselwhite, Jeff Beck, Robert Johnson and the like.
What do I want from the Guild??? The chance to contact other musicians, share views and information, and make new contacts!
Cheers.
Mitch
