Marv how nice to type to you again - I havent been in the happiest democracy in the world for 18 months now and am in no rush to hurry back - I am now faced with 24 months of very different challenges, but ones that will allow me to drink beer, annoy my wife and teach my children apalling table manners and most of the Monty Python collection of amusing doggerel. How are you

Well, I moved 2000 miles from SLC to work for $WeMakeRouters in RTP North Carolina. I am glad to hear you are back in civilization (for some values of the term) and I hope that your life will allow you to post here from time to time.
Now I only know one person playing in the sandbox just now. My former room mate is currently an E5 Sgt who is bucking for OCS. My oldest friend in teh world is transfering to Germany soon. Just one more friend there... God speed to his any everyone elses journey home.

My X is still ensconced in Bagram, where, apparently, they are building a permanent base. Built by whom, you ask? Halliburton, of course.
PWM, it is nice to see you home and safe and in one piece. Let's hope you stay that way for some time to come.
First teaching of the quarter this morning, and I screwed up badly. I'd turned the readings around, and was flummoxed why my students knew nothing about the Flemish revolt of 1321-28, since it was the first chapter, when one pointed out to me quite nicely that they were supposed to start the reading in that book on page 77. It was the OTHER book in which they were to start at the beginning.
YIKES! Bad move on my part. I promised them I'd get better, now that I'm no longer on medication.

*nearly swoons at seeing our besandalled PWM stride into the salon* How wonderful to see you safe and sound! I think I left a message at your personal space some time back... just fretting about those salonistas with tonsures.
We still have to account for Seth of Arabia and eatsmice. I hate those long silences.
I am still in Lincoln and handy to Holloman if your peripatetics take you to the western US.

Shoes? My goodness, the diverse topics we enjoy around here...
As for me, I have a very bad habit of buying cheap shoes and wearing them until they're almost worn out, but not quite ready to throw away. So my closet is filled with lots and lots of mostly worn out shoes. It's the Vimes Shoe Theory of Economics. If I could afford to spend $200 on shoes, like my pop does, I'd only have two or three pairs. 90% of my shoes are sandals - I hate closed-toe shoes. I suffer greatly in the winter. Coolest shoes I own is actually a pair of thigh-high pirate boots that I wear to ren faires and the like.
Montana, there's nothing wrong with buying a pair of shoes to match an outfit. It just means you now have to buy more clothes to match the shoes.
Marv, don't let them give you too hard of a time. Big feet just mean you have less of a chance of falling over.
Gardening...
My back is so sore. I dug and dug in the garden until I had four beautiful rows of dirt/manure, then planted 18 tomato plants and 6 pepper plants. One of the tomato plants isn't going to make it, but that's okay - I've got three spares in a planter. I'm looking for more vegetables to plant in the less sunny part of the garden - thinking about those melons Hypatia mentioned a while back. Then I dug around in the flower beds and planted lots of Dusty Miller and English ivy. Today I planted lavender and more Dusty Miller (love that plant!) and parsley and peppermint... I think I need a big rosemary bush and some purple basil to top off my herb garden.
The HHGG movie premiers on April 29th here in the States, and we're thinking of showing up in our pajamas and robes, with a towel thrown over our shoulders. The hard part will be sneaking in Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters.

You just have to know how to smuggle.

Graduate students know how to smuggle. A book bag and a nalgene bottle...works every time.

The hardest thing to smuggle in is a 6-pack. The problem isn't getting it in - it's disguising the sound of the *POP* *Hissssssss* as you crack them open.
