My venue for complaining about the mindless tedium of my daily existence.
In real life, I'm a graphic designer for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. It's a good job, and they allow me to work at night, which is nice, because I could never get to work on time for a nine-to-five job. In my spare time, I do freelance design work and illustration, and make leather masks in the Italian/Mardi Gras style. When I'm not busy doing that, I paint and draw, play the guitar (poorly,) collect unusual and bizarre comic books, and bang on my djembe or bongos to scare those demons away.Books
When I'm too tired to do any of that, I read. A lot. Almost constantly. I used to read science fiction and fantasy almost exclusively, but I've expanded my horizons in recent years. Mainly because I've run out of good science fiction and fantasy novels. Eventually I'll post a list of my favorite science fiction novels, just because I think they deserve some sort of recognition. My favorite authors include John Varley, Spider Robinson, Robert Heinlein, Douglas Adams (of course!) Terry Pratchett, and many more which I can't think of at the moment.
Music
I've always loved rock and roll, but recently I've begun to appreciate Americana music, which is best described as ya'll-ternative. It's country music, but not the sort of pre-digested pap that comes out of Nashville. It's unique, with sophisticated lyrics and bluegrass rhythms. Instead of songs about apple pie and Mom, there's songs about drinking Mad Dog margaritas at the Chilly Parlour bar in Austin (Wish I was in Austin, by Guy Clarke), or a man murdering a woman for her diamonds and giving them to his best girl (Lovin County, by Charlie Robison.) If you're interested, check out people like Charlie Robison, or Steve Earle, or Robert Earl Keen.
Community Artist
I've worked as an artist for years, but don't usually create web graphics... Now I've volunteered as a community artist, which will hone my graphic design skills, and hopefully will give me some experience for my future freelance work. And yes, if you're wondering, the graphics on this page were done by me. I have some new ones which I'd like to show off as well, but I have to hunt down the blob numbers first.
