dElaphant (and Zeppo his dog (and Gummo, Zeppos dog)) - Left my apostrophes at the BBC Posted Apr 12, 2005
Good to have you back safely, PWM.
I have more shoes than I wear, because I refuse to throw them out for some unknown reason. So I have one pair of sneakers that I use, and 3 that are so squashed, chewed, and deteriorated that they no longer have any reason to exist. 1 pair of docksiders, and another with a floppy sole. A pair of black dress shoes (resoled once, and in need of another sole-saving), and a pair of black dress shoes that are far too small and should go to charity. Only one pair of brown dress shoes, I did manage to finally just last summer toss the old pair of brown shoes that were nearing 20 years old. A pair of sandals and another pair of former sandals that were (when they were wearable) so comfortable that I can bear to see them go. And moccasins, with a fresh chunk bitten out of the right heel.

I had to open the library at 7:15 this morning so a local hospital could setup for a health fair. I have had no coffee and no breakfast - fasting for blood tests. I am not a happy camper.
The finger that mother had surgery on last week is swelled to twice its size and has blisters. I have to take her to the surgeon's office in about an hour. She will not follow instructions. She took the bandage off that she was supposed to leave on. I'm sure got it wet and also am sure she's been moving the finger too much and has fouled up the skin graft.
She's worse than a child sometimes. She's so stubborn and contrary and insists on doing just as she pleases.

I'm waiting for a neighbor to drop off some poster materials for the POny Express competition. She said she would be here at 7 and I make it about 8:15 now. I will be in the shower at 9 whether she has shown up or not. And that's MY day delayed an hour or more. This woman was 30 minutes late for her daughter's wedding!!

The problem with keyboards and mice being filthy all the time is that there simply isn't a decent, easy way to clean any of them.
I inherited a mouse and keyboard set at work and while I must admit that I get them dirty in my own right, the mouse in particular was a grotesque sight to behold. I work on a macinotsh so I have one of those long white keyboards (grey I suppose) with black letters and a black optical mouse (see-through). If you've seen the mouse, or if you haven't, there is a place on either side of it for you thumb to rest (whether your are a lefty or a righty); let me tell you, this thing had so much dried skin underneath it, it was disgusting. And not just dried skin, it was mixed with grease and it was yellowing. I hope none of you were eating just now. But this person was not some greasy pig, there was simply no easy way to clean out the mouse and day after day dried skin comes off your fingers and the natural oils from your skin just start to build up (not to mention all those hairs you find while knocking out your keyboard). Anywho, I ended up taking my thumb, prying the side of the mouse just enough for a folded up piece of paper to wedge into the crevice and pushing all the gook out and finishing up the cleaning with an air hose. The keyboard was a decidedly easier matter. I simply pried off all the keys (taking care with my shift keys and space bar), threw them in a bucket of soapy water, cleaned them off, shook out (and took the air hose to) my keyboard and plopped them all back on again. Of course it took me a good three weeks to realize that I had put my C and V keys on backwords, but it got done.

I allowed myself an extra cup of tea and the lady showed up just a few minutes ago, 9:15. She was carrying a cup of coffee and wanted to sit down and have a chat! That's over two hours late and she just reckoned I wouldn't be doing anything in particular, just sitting here in suspended animation.
Keyboards: a one-dollar flat paintbrush is good for sweeping down between the keys. I have as much problem with cat hair as with regular dust.

Mrs Zen Posted Apr 12, 2005
Hello everyone, and thank you for the Birthday Wishes.
Hello PWM, and welcome back here and there!
Discovered today that the place I am working won't be renewing my contract - long story and they'd keep me if I could. However think I want to work for them permanently, and they will probably want me to do so, so I am toying with the idea suggesting that I continue with the permanent application and agree a later start date, (say August or September), and slipping in some holiday or another contract in the meantime.
I felt a bit shook up when they first said that they weren't renewing, but I feel a bit better now.
The annoying thing is that the PC with my CV on it is at home, and I cannot apply for jobs until next week.

Oh - shoes:
1 pr walking boots
1 pr purple doc marten boots
1 pr green doc marten shoes
1 pr red birkenstocks
2 prs sensible sandles for wearing to work
2 prs black dress boots (one in the cobblers, thinking about it)
2 prs mock crock patent leather shoes bought for me by my ex which I cant bring myself to part with - one blue one dark green
2 prs very cheap black suedy shoes for working in
Its a good job I have long broad feet and solid ankles; I would be Imelda Marcos if I could.
I *love* shoes, but can't wear the really sexy ones.

One professor's summary reviews down, 3 to go. I'm terribly frightened by my advisor's reviews...they take up all of one two inch binder, and a full half of another.
Ah, well.
French exam next Tuesday, and then I'm done with that, and then down and dirty exam prep, and then it's review two books for a journal, and then study like hell for my latin exam.
I think I'll go down to San Diego and beg EMR's parents to let me have her for a week!

Ti, I didn't realize the Huns existed per se anymore. I thought that was a catch-all name, like the Visigoths or Vandals, that described an ethnic group known by another name today. I always thought the Huns were Mongolians. Although I'm not entirely surprised they're Hungarian (Ha! Huns - Hungarian). I've read in many places that the Hungarian language is completely unrelated to its neighbor languages, Romance and Germanic. It's closest relative in Europe is Finnish, and both have an Asian origin.
