Very good tea at that

I wasn't offput, dear Goddess. Merely stating that it is easier to play the fool when you are one

Montana Redhead (now with letters)

Oh, don't get me wrong, I play the fool often enough! Just because I can discuss the ramifications of Aquinas' proof for the existence of God doesn't mean I can do much good playing, say, cricket. The Fraulein Grafenberg and I spend each Tuesday evening playing trivia at a local pub, and we amaze eachother with all of the useless s**t we know. And why, you ask? So that we don't feel like such geeks.

*slugs back a full cuppa*

And how are you, dear?

Phil, I am afraid that I do not quite believe you that therre is more than one 9 o'clock on either Saturday or Sunday. I know that the clock said it was nine last week when I actually went to church but I thought it was broken. Red good to see you about.

Alas Sleep beckons. 0330 here behind the Zion curtain.

*The Professor gathers up his jacket (as it always hangs low when he does this), and bows from the waist down.*

I thank you ever so much for taking the time to read and add to my discussion in the other thread. I am pleased that you have taken me seriously, and that this niggling problem can be sorted out. smiley - smiley

Enough of this now, we should get over it and continue. For any people who didn't read the other thread, I have decided to keep my VR referrals in this forum limited to merely actions (such as my bowing above), and my arrivals/departures. I will of course spring the occasional thing on you, such as leaving for San Beta (most likely to happen nearer my exams in RL), but it won't be overdone as before.

Matina, a cup of elderflower, rose and strawberry tea please (my fave at the mo)...

Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence

I inherited Gretta from my dad when she was already 4 and totally undisciplined, accustomed to a rigid schedule and an unending supply of junk food. Another 4 years later she has loosened up the need for rigidity and been weaned off the junk food, and she has learned to listen when I speak in the house or in the garden.

But once we are off the property limits, she becomes a different animal, one of those loathsome idiots who tries to choke themselves to death on their own collar. She has a lovely temperament and is friendly to strangers, but she is bloody silly. With her high center of gravity and her distractedness she has even fallen over on the leash several times.

This is not a dog who will do well in the country.

So I'll be giving her to my brother, who lives in Virginia Beach, and something like a golden retriever might be ideal. Short-haired and light-coloured so that it can withstand a hot summer and laid back enough not to follow me from room to room, agonising over what I might be going to do next. You know something's wrong when you decide not to fetch something from the next room because you know it's going to bring your dog bounding to her feet, quivering with anxiety.

*sighs and accepts breakfast tea and hot cross buns from Matina* Did you say elderflower and strawberry, Professor? Where do you obtain such a tea?

Hello Lil. smiley - smiley

Yep, that's the tea. I got it from S****bury's (I'm guessing I can't mention the name), a supermarket here. I don't know if it's in America anywhere...
It's lovely tea though. I like elderflower anyway, but a hot drink of it is even better!

Hehe...I thought that my type of dog would be fine for the country, but then you mentioned something. My dog, Caspian, is always following my mum around the house, so I don't think a spaniel would work. smiley - winkeye

What about a greyhound, Lil? You get a lot of dog for your money, they're intelligent, pale coloured and just need the opportunity to race round in circles for twenty minutes twice a day. The rest of the time they just lounge about conserving their energy.

The only problem with an ex-racing dog is that they may need to be house trained. Oh, and you need to keep them away from hares and small dogs that might look like a hare in the wrong light.

Lil, When I lived in Moab Utah (Deep desert for those who have not read my wonderful yarn edited in part by our own Loony) many of my friends had retrievers. They seemed to fare well in the desert. If you want one that will ignore you unless they really wany food you could always go for a Bassett Hound. They are very laid back but tend to howl for little reason. They can also have a problem with obesiety. My phiolosphy on getting a dog or cat is to save one from the pound or shelter. My folks indeed just got a new cat that way.

Lil, when you move, maybe a whippit, a cloth cap and a loft of pigeons will help keep you focused on unearthing the mysteries behind early Western tintypes?

The name Asteroid Sherlock has a certain charm and mystique.

That's why getting a greyhound is so good, Marv. If we don't rescue them they get "discarded".

Hear, hear Marv.
Over the years we've had eleven cats of one kind or another, all rescuees? from the Cat Protection league or similar. My favourites were two half Burmese (their pedigree mother escaped one night!) who would squawk away all day.
As for dogs, although I always wanted a German Shephard, now that I want to lose some weight, I think a collie would be more appropriate..

Though our dog was bought from a breeder (and a good one too), we got our two twin cats from a rescue shelter. Well, they weren't rescued as such, but were given up there by their previous owners, who said they couldn't cope with them.
The cats seem to have a rather nervous trait, and I'm guessing their previous life wasn't quite as good or welcoming as it is now, if you get my meaning.
Still, they're fine here.

Eatsmice.

I find it strange, that as a species, man is constantly evolving, intermingling, slowly breaking down the boundaries between race and religion, but when it comes to animals we force beasts like dogs, cats horses into the form that we as humans want.
I can understand the breeding of farm animals to provide more meat, less fat, be healthier, but the breeding of dogs and cats for purely looks is beyond me.
I think the reason I loved my two Burmese-mix beasties, Greebo and Moe, so much, was because they had broken out of the mold that was being imposed on their mothers offspring.
How often do you see pedigree dogs in sanctuaries? There are plenty of super animals in need of a good home without us imposing even more inbred beasts on the world.

Lil, if I were you I would go for the cock-eyed mongrel in need of a good brush and with the heart of a saint.
