Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like Posted Aug 16, 2003
Essex celebs. Well the ones I think of instantly are;
1) H Rider Haggard, the author most famous for writing 'She' (made into a quite jolly film with Christopher Lee and Ursula Andress) and 'King Solomon's Mines'. Both featured the adventurer Alan Quatermaine, who was a sort of grandaddy to Indiane Jones. Haggard lived in Broonfield, just outside Chelmsford.
2) Ian Dury. You really need telling about him? He taught at Billericay School (I went to the Mayflower), and it was while working there that he gained the inspiration for such classics as 'Clever Trevor' and, of course, 'Billericay Dickie'.
3) Captain Titus Oates, who came from Tiptree. Oates was part of Scott's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole, and suffering from severe frostbite and in the knowledge that he was slowing down the survivors, stepped out of the tent with the immortal words 'I'm going out now. I may be some time'. Although his sacrifice was, in the end, for nothing. It is still one of the bravest acts that i can think of.

I've got another one: Helen Mirren... She lived in Leigh and went to St Bernard High School in Westcliff where she was a bit of a rebel according to her biography...
Update: found a piccy for Dr Who/Tom Baker... not the one i remember, but it's a start...
Basildonbondgirl and Blues Shark... Your names will be added to the list any time today...
mmmmm.. Today i will try to make up for not having been online much these last days...
talk soon everyone...

Oh, and lets not forget that Damon Albarn is a good middle class Colchester boy as well...
Not to mention the entire cast of Dr Feelgood, Depeche Mode, Alison Moyet (my mate Spikey refers to her as 'Auntie Alf' - she was his babysitter.), and most of the Prodigy now live out Braintree way as well.
I'll think of some more while I'm on holiday, I expect...

Hi Loup and Blues I hope you are both keeping well.
Here is another one: Alice Diehl - Musician & Novelist.
Alice Diehl was born Alice Mangold in her grandfather's house at Aveley in 1844. She wrote 'The True Story of my Life' which was published in 1908 when she was 64. She died on June 13 1912 in Ingatestone.
Alice's own perform career as a pianist started in 1861 in Paris, after she was taught in Germany. She also performed in London. She later married the violinist and song composer Louis Diehl in 1863,

Blues Shark: again...
By the way... While surfing the net to find relevant links for the list/page/entry, i quickly saw that Ian Dury had a disability [was voted one of the best disabled celebs by "Ouch!"], but there was no details about it unfortunately... Any clues?!...
I tried to get the link for the "Top of The pop" 1979 [presented by Noel Edmunds at the time - another nominated celeb for the Essex celebs list] when he sang "Hit me with...", but there was a problem opening the link unfortunately.. never mind, i'm sure i will find something where he was singing...
Kat... It's a piccy from the h2g2 picture library and it is a Doctor Who related one... I will look for some external links with pictures of Tom Baker next time i look for links for him...
I noticed there was a BBC link where he talks about the Daleks... could be for the page/entry/list...
Back soon..

Captain_SpankMunki [Keeper & Former ACE] Thanking <Diety of choice> for the joy of Goo. Posted Aug 18, 2003
Anne Boleyn's father restored the manor that is now the Rochford Hundred Golf Club in Rochford. There's also a pub, just outside Rochford called the Anne Boleyn but is now, alas, a Hungry Horse

Liam...
kat as well, if i haven't say thanks earlier [yep.. i'm starting to lose it..]
Some completly off-topic stuff now:
First, it seems that there is a pattern emerging somewhere... Every time i announce that i will do some work on the list, Real Life gets in the way..
Can anyone with a digibox check if my space is now digibox accessible again?!... I hope it is as i intend to put a few more plugs for the Group on it very soon... Hey, nothing is too good for the h2g2 Essex Researchers Group...
I was not exaggerating for the last point, the infos which have been provided in the Group's page's threads are great... I've learned a lot about my new home... everyone...
I won't announce that i will try to do some work on a certain entry tonight though, just in case...
Talk soon...

Wulfric Posted Aug 28, 2003
Apparently Robert the Bruce was Lord of the Manor of Writtle, as he was an Anglo-Norman. I don't know how true this is, though, but I've certainly read it in a couple of history books.
Damon Albern moved to Colchester when he was 9 from Whitechapel.
Could Gugliemo (sp?) Marconi be considered an honoury Essex Man even though he was Italian??

Reality Manipulator Posted Aug 28, 2003
Thanks Loup for your very kind compliments.
Wulvric the information about Robert the Bruce sounds very .
Wulvric was Robert the Bruce, the same Robert the Bruce in Braveheart?

Wulfric... As Marconi is connected with Essex, it's fine...
Xian... I'm glad my space is digibox accessible again... Actually it was the perfect timing as my phone line is having some kind of problems _again_...
I will make a few more changes later on so that the shortened version doesn't look too much the same than the relocated [and longer] one...
Everyone... talk soon...

Xian... yep, i tamed my PC eventually [still working out ways of making more memory available though]...
The current problem is the phone line unfortunately, but it's only a small inconvenience; i still can write something, save it on a floppy disk and go to the library to post it if needed... Which might be my next move if the problem is not fixed by monday...
Or i could do it the other way: go to the library, copy the entry on a floppy disk with all the names which have been mentioned on this thread and work on it at home offline... Whatever way should help making up for all the delays...
about my homepage... I intend to add some welcoming messages for any visitors from the other DNA sites... Who knows we might be able to get some input for the Essex Group's threads from some of them that way...
Talk soon everyone...

Hi Sian, Loup and Blues Shark I hope you are all keeping well. I have been having problems getting on h2g2, making postings and getting onto my space. I have been able to get onto space today via my tv digibox but not able to access any postings. I am here at the library so I may not be able to post as much as I can.
