hi Mina...
hi kat...
the tourist offices might be able to help as well.. they tend to have books about the old essex... tho' of course if you can find some in a second shop or a charity shop you will get the same info for cheaper... libraries also sell some of their books sometimes.. worth having a look...
talk soon...

thanks for the information loup. the book i have got is mainly about the very remote areas of essex and it gives meanings to names of essex towns and villages.

seems an interesting one, kat... a lot can be learned from the names given to old villages/towns...

kat... yep... an entry on essex names would be good...
i'm kinda keen myself on doing one on the celebs connected to essex [tho' that would be a collaborative one as anyone who gives some celebrities names will be credited... which is fair enough..]... it will be an ongoing one anyway as i'm sure even if we managed to get all of them, it's bound to be some new ones popping up on a regular basis... anyway it's an idea.. we will see how it goes...
but an entry on essex names, yep... definitely a good idea..

About 10 yrs ago, Romford tried to use a very old law to close South Ockensdon's 2 day a week market. Romford a 'market town' had an old law which said, no market could be open within 6 walking days of a shepherd and xx amount of sheep I can't really remember much about it, just that it was a bit strange. They didn't succeed anyway S/Ockendoon still has it's market.

would be interesting to find out more about these laws... not exactly the kind of info we find in the local papers that...

hi emmily something similar happened about 10 years ago concerning ilford, havering borough council blocked their application for a market. ilford has been trying to have a market for many years but i never knew if they were finally succesful or not.

I'll try to find out more Loup, it was in our local paper. Myself and my son both work on the S/Ock market. I'll ask around see if any of the stall-holders are still there from that long ago, maybe they'll know where I can find the 'written details' of that law.

I wonder if that was Romford trying 'pull the same stunt' same there, Kat. I'll ask about Ilford too.

oooops i meant to say "we don't see every day in the local papers".. they do run stories about the not always known history of Essex at times [my apologies to the local papers for insinuating that they never do]..
emmily.. yep.. that would be great... especially if it explains how they worked out the time it takes to walk from/to a shepperd...
kat.. did they give some reasons for that?!... obviously the sillier the reasons the better... hehe...
