Only a suggestion of course... But, it would be great if we used this thread to mention some of the local news which might be of interest for some of us [even if it's just for the poster...]...

I was thinking more along the line of cheerful news... or funny... or whatever news really, as long as they can bring some kind of smile on our faces...

Of course, it will be a good idea to mention where we got these infos [eg name of local newspaper etc] so that we don't break any [written or unwritten] rules...

As mentioned in the celebs thread, i will try to be online for a bit this afternoon... Hopefully, i will have something to post in this thread as well...

Hello Loup I hope you are keeping well.

I read in the Thurrock Gazette Friday August 29 2003 that there is a befriending scheme for isolated older people organised by the group Age of Concern. It is asking for volunteers.

Last week to celebrate National Astronomy week, Thurrock Astronomy Society had an open night for people to come for an observation evening at Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury last Saturday. It was from 7.45pm to 10.15pm. Members of the society will be focusing on the planet Mars which is at its closet to Earth for 60,000 years.

Hi kat...

Yep, i'm ... Spent my free time yesterday getting rid of some nasty adwares/spywares from my computer... Not only they give infos about my surfing etc to some commercial companies [and slow down the PC as well, which i certainly don't need], but one of these things could have hi-jacked my modem and accessed premium [expensive] sites without my knowledge... I do feel better since i've managed to get rid of them...


The Mars info... Heard about it on Radio Essex... Some great news on there as well...

Loup I hope I will be able to get more intresting news. On teletext on 3 at the weekends there is page about weird stories that happened during the week. I will look there to see if there are any Essex related stories.

Loup I am that you have sorted out your pc problems. When I am at the library now and again I get pop up adverts when opening my yahoo emails.

Loup this story is about a Thurrock man but it is set in Newquay in Cornwall and I wonder if it counts.

Bridegroom John Nash from Thurrock, came up the idea of a stag party pub-crawl through the Cornish seaside resort of Newquay with everyoned dressed as the 118 118 characters from the tv advert.

Sporting the sole 192 shirt and dressed as an ageing runner with a Zimmer frame, he was joined by 15 friends from Fen FC, a Thurrock Sunday league team.

Yep... this news item qualifies ok.. Anything qualifies as long as it made at least the poster smile...

I have to keep an eye on the free local paper and try to post something when i see something which could be of interest for this thread... There are usually a few items that make me smile when i read it...

Stolen property seeks a gnome

Police discovered 117 garden ornaments including gnomes on a Standford-le-hope driveway. They are now being cared for by the kind officers of Corringham police.

It was an idea of a practical joke as they must have lifted the ornaments from neighbours gardens to put on this poor man's front garden after a Friday night out.

Owners can come to the station and claim their garden ornaments.

Crowds have gathered to watch students from Thurrock performed a special show for David Blaine on London's South Bank last Tuesday as he approached the last few days of his publicity stunt where he was suspended in a box and only lived on water for the last 5 weeks.

During the past couple of weeks the team of eight pupils from Thurrock council's pupil support service has been working hard on a performance, based on the hit show Stomp. Using dustbin, lids, pipes and household equipment as instruments, the pupils entertained David Blaine over the last 5 weeks.

Pupil support service deputy teacher in charge, Tony Cole, said "Many of these children have a lack of confidence, so it was fantastic to see them performing in front of a crowd and really enjoying themselves.

Those have have taken part will be given merits for their Passports Adventure - an award scheme which encourages pupils to take part in a slection of activities and personal challenges.

East Thurrock MP Angela Smith agreed to clean our the hedgehogs at the South East Essex Wildlife hospital based at Orsett Fruit Farm in Orsett Road in Orsett.

I know this a month late but it reviews the Leigh on Sea cultural scene:

The Leigh Art Trial began 7 years ago. It attracts about 40 artists every year that spreads across 29 venues in the Town. Visitors have access to each display being free of charge which includes paintings, illustrations and sculputures that are scattered in shops and other locations throughout Leigh on Sea.

The Leigh Folk Festival which thisthis summer celebrated 10 succesful yeayears. The festival is held in June and attracts hords of musical artists to the Town. You can can enjoy almost every kind of music and dad dance under the sun to Jive to Line-dancing, To Morris dancing and Egyptian Rhythms to Appaliachian clog dances. There are also comedians. There is also also the Sailing Club Regatta as well as the First ever Leigh Seafood festival September 27 and 28. This festival encourages people to visit Leigh on Sea and tad taste fresh locally caught seafood either in restaurants or taken home to use in their cookioking.

Local restaurants, cafes and pubs have taken part in the Fish festival by serving local seafood and by increasing the number of fish dishes available on their menus.

Pippy comes to the aid of Pudsey

Tilbury warehouse worker John Wa Walker volunteered to be a star for the day in aid of Childildren in Need at DHL Fashion in Thurrockr Parkway.

His colleagues slected him to be Scandinavian fictional hereoine Poppy Longstocking who is best known for her stripey leggings, short skirt and mad-cap hairdo. They had cut about seven inches of his hair too. But they raised over £500 for the Children in Need Charity.
