Sydney Chaplin and the Grays connection.
Sydney John Chaplin, the elder half brother of the better known film am actor Charlie Chap, was an 'Exmouth boy'. He had spentent some time on the Grays based traininging ship T.S. Exmouth, being taught in the way of the sea, at the turn of the century, he never actually lost contact with his old training ship, making a numbember of return visits throughout his life.
Sydney (he was called Syd) (was born in 1855, approxmately four years before his brother Charlie was born in 1889. The name of Syd's own father was not given when his birth was registered, nor when he was baptised. Syd's brother admiremire and looked ued up to Syd who acted as a father during the family's troubled upbringing. Mother and the boys had been residiiding in Lambeth Workhouse for three weeks when the boys were transferrrred on the 18th June, 181896 to the Hanwell Scchools for Orphans and Destitue Children some 12 miles out fro from the centre of London, Sydney ney was in the senior school and worked in the kitchens, rarely seeing hng hng his younger brother.

Sydney Chaplin worked as a telegraphic messenger boy, joined a theatrical company as a bugler playelayer, assistant steward and bandsmon the Union Castle mail steamship Company line's S.S. Norman, as, as a bugler, embarking on the Cape Mail Run. Sydney also appeared on stage with his brother Charlie in pantomines or reviews as well asl as a tour with Charlie with 'Sherlock Holmes'. He then tried his handhand as a comedian in musical hall sketches which led him appearing at the 'Talk of the Town' in London and he also replaced Charlie on an American variety tour when Charlie could not be released due to contract/work committments.

Syd Chaplin was also the highest paid Hollywood star in his day - signing a million dollar contract. But there was some sort of scandal (involving sex and possibly under-age girls!) and he never made any films again. He retired to Switzerland (like Charlie) and died, I think, in the 1960s.

Dick Turpin was born in Hempstead (I think) in Essex.
Mike Oldfield has been going since the 60's when he was in Kevin Ayer's band The Whole World (I think it was called!). God, I sound old!
