I've been reading "Love in the Time of Cholera." The main character is a doctor who starts his practice in a time when surgeons were expected to wear fancy dress clothing while they worked. smiley - huh

Someone once joked that the first president Bush wore cufflinks on his pajamas.

This has inspired me to buy a second pair of pajama bottoms, for formal occasions.

smiley - laughsmiley - snork Strangely, I don't have the same afliction as I do to pyjamas, when it comes to nightys and gowns etc... well, so long as they're silk and in pretty colours smiley - blushsmiley - diva though I seriously doubt if anyone could pull off wearing any such items, as I have, in public, or, indeed, in semi-public smiley - blushsmiley - divasmiley - handbag

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

It appears to me that there is a certain element of Social Contract that should probably be observed in public. This is why, for example, I have nothing against naturism in general but think the Naked Rambler is a troublemaker.

I wear pyjamas and like wearing pyjamas. But not in public.

Would you wear swimming trunks or running or cycling shorts designed to be worn without underwear in public? Are these a social problem?

Is it socially unprofessional for a man to wear shorts compared to a woman wearing a skirt of an identical length?

I think Tesco has banned nightwear (as worn by customers). No more nipping out for breakfast supplies...
Although it seems odd to go out for a meal in nightwear, provided it's decent, I see no reason against it.
The cleanliness issue doesn't apply - your day clothes could be just as dirty/ sweaty.

Certainly could be more decent than the skimpy vests & shorts or sundresses that I've seen some people wearing.

When we were in a traditional inn in Japan we were told that we could wear the pyjama supplied, in the restaurant. As it is customary to have a bath early evening & change, this seemed practical. Those keeping day clothes on were certainly in the minority. However it didn't seem quite so good when one chap turned up for breakfast, still in his pjs - most were spruced up ready for the day.

"Is it socially unprofessional for a man to wear shorts compared to a woman wearing a skirt of an identical length?" [Bluebottle]

There are some terrible proper Bostonians who think no self-respectable man should ever wear shorts on city streets. And among shorts, cargo shorts are a step below that! However, the whole concept of professional and unprofessional assumes that everyone who would be on any street is part of the work force. I guess retirees are invisible, or assumed to be so old-school and square that they only wear long pants anyway. And then you look at what the people who are actually walking on the streets of Boston, and you realize that during the Summer a great many of them must be tourists. If tourists are allowed to wear shorts and other casual clothes in the Summer, why can't the natives wear them, too? smiley - huh

...I cannot tell a lie.

I went out today wearing only a pair of grey gym trunks and a white t-shirt and moccasins.

Usually its a pattern t-shirt.

Of course, if I turn my gym trunks inside out, they're transformed into black gym trunks.

To be sure, the temperature was 107F/42C today, and when I went to town to pick up my mail (a once a week event), I wore long pants and a button up sports shirt with proper (Gucci) white tennis shoes...

I have a shower before my dinner in the evening and put me PJs on afterwards. But I don't sleep in them, I change into a T-shirt style nightdress for that because I hate the way the bottoms ride up your leg in the night.

If it's a Sunday night and my wheelie bin is at the bottom of the drive ready for collection next morning, I might just wander down to add some extra rubbish in my PJs but that's as far as it goes.

Perhaps the woman in the OP was ill with something that made dressing difficult. Post-operative, perhaps, with drains attached, so wearing daytime clothes was hard. Perhaps she'd been confined to the house and it was driving her mad so they went to the pub for some light relief.

That said...I'm afraid my automatic assumption if I saw someone out in PJs would be that they had mental problems of some kind. I wouldn't be offended or anything but I'd want to keep my distance.

A QOTD doesn't have to be funny, merely communicate a truth.

I was just thinking about the material in post 54, the last time I had a surgery, how self-conscious I'd felt going out to a restaurant neat my motel, getting a takeout so as not to upset other diners, finding on my return that the surgical drain was so inconspicuous I couldn't see it myself except with a hard squint, though I was intensely aware of it otherwise.
