""How such a large number can iron out their many disputes in a one-day conference is not clear, but with less than five months until the election, time is very short to create an entirely new political force.""

looks like it might be a democratically elected muslim/islamist govt. in egypt next, closely followed by sharia law!!!!!

Taff, what makes you leap from 'elected Islamist government' to sharia law? The Turks have been showing the world how its done for the better part of a decade, Indonesia's government has Islamist elements to it and there's no threat of sharia there and Bangladesh's governments have always had strong Islamist influence and again, no sharia.
That's the big question that lies before them: if the Muslim Brotherhood abandons some of its more extreme policies and becomes a broad-based political party it could become an Egyptian ANC with all the legitimacy, respect and power that comes with such a role.
It's like saying Communists can never hold power because their first acts will be to nationalise everything and collectivise everyone. You just have to ignore the fact an EU nation is headed by a communist currently, that the Nepalese Maoists did their best to form good government in Nepal before being forced out and West Bengal, one of India's most populous states, has been led by Communists since the 70s without gulags cropping up.

""Taff, what makes you leap from 'elected Islamist government' to sharia law?""
""Their big fear, they say, is that the Muslim Brotherhood will dominate the election planned for September because no alternative secular party has yet been organised to replace the discredited party of Mr Mubarak, which has been banned. ""
this paragraph draws the line between the muslim brotherhood and secular parties, if there is no oposed oposition to the muslim brotherhood, they could go to those extremes
as for turkey, its a secular state and its enshrined in its constitution and the army takes gaurding the constitution very seriously, as do the juditiary
checks and balances, like might not happen in egypt

Also there has been numerous statements from leaders in the Muslim Brotherhood over the last few months, saying they want sharia law in Egypt.

I think that was garbled in translation Xanatic. I happen to know the good brothers in Egypt and they're huge fans of Fatal Attraction and would just love Sharon Stone to go visit them. When they're talking about a "damned good Stoning", I think they may be imagining something different from us.

Spring has come to Canada:
'Manitoba declared a state of emergency across several municipalities Monday afternoon as the flood threat rose in the southern areas of the province.
Canadian Forces members were being dispatched to Manitoba's second-largest city, Brandon, and were topping dikes on the Assiniboine River between Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie, 80 kilometres west of the capital.'

Tommorow there will be another attempt to pass a bill in Uganda, making homosexual activity punishable with imprisonment, including possibly life sentence.
Last time the bill went up, it was actually the death penalty that was called for, but the bill was vetoed after international pressure. If you want, there´s a petition that can be signed here:
