Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like Posted Jul 18, 2005
Had a cracking day at the flicks yesterday.
Went to see Madagascar. I'll be honest, it's not as good as Shreck, or Shreck 2, but it is a well made movie with turns from Sacha Baron Cohen and Cedric the Entertainer. I loved every minute of it. (Although be warned. You *will* have Reel2Reel feat the Mad Stuntman 'Il like to move it' as an earworm for at least a day afterwards.) t has more than enough funny movie parodies to keep the Grups happy, and deals with the themes of growing up and loyalty to ones friends in a manner that most kids will recognize.
But I'd be lying if I said it was good as Neil Marshall's superb follow up to 'Dog Soldiers', his sweaty, claustrophobic nightmare 'The Descent'. It's been years since I've been genuinely frightened by a film like this. An excellent ensemble cast desreve most of the credit for making what is undoubtedly one of the best pieces of British film making since...
Well, for a very, very long time.

Oh, my! I'd lost track, somehow, of this thread since February. It's gonna take a while to peruse all the postings I've missed since then.
Meanwhile, I *finally* got round to getting us a Netflix account back in early March. Since then, we've watched at least 60 films. I won't name them all, but some of the highlights were "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie", "In The Soup", "Cat Soup", "Fear Of A Black Hat", "La Strada", "City of God", "Hotel Rwanda", and "Pretty Village, Pretty Flame". If I think of any other outstanding stuff I'll add it later.

I *hated* it. But then I do hate that sort of film so I'm not the best person to ask. People who enjoy that genre said it was highly enjoyable.

I saw "War of the Worlds" on Tuesday morning - apart from two "power surges" causing breaks in the film - I thought it was brilliant.
Apart from the ending, which was so - well, not fair for me to give it away, but I found it totally unbelieveable () and it would have been a lot better without the final minute.
Tom Cruise is worth every penny of the gazillion dollars he was paid for this movie (and I've seen him in some stinkers)
I'd score this 9/10 (but remember I'm a sci-fi fan so non-fans may hate it)

galaxy babe..2 power shortages in one film...you could have tried for some free tickets for the inconvenience...depends on the staff, but when we went to a film in our local, and they botched up the beginning of the haunted mansion by not going widescreen i complained [as it had happened before] and he gave us free tickets...
i'm not a complainer by nature but you'd be surprised how much companies want to keep their customers sweet....working alongside customer services has really opened my eyes...and if your enjoyment of your movie experience has been marred they should compensate you...
depends on wether the power failure was only with them or the entire area.....that could be the grey area.
some girls in work went to see the wedding crashers and loved it, but they are only 19yrs old...i have my doubts about it..might wait for dvd.

The Descent: brilliant.
It's been a while since I've actually jumped at the movies.
I'm torn between what was more terrifying: the claustophobia of the earlier scenes or the shock of the .... (not going to spoil it)
I've heard it's rife with film in-jokes. I think I spotted Apocalypse Now, Carrie, Predator and The Thing. Did I miss any others?

yes its the claustrophobic atmosphere thats almost as frightening as the....... some reviews have likened it to creep..but i thought that was most over rated...not scary at all...but i did jump at the descent...not literally into the descent..you know what i mean..
i can see the carrie and predator connections...any clues as to the thing connection without spoiling....

The Empire review also mentioned Aliens. Can't say I spotted that one. Any others?
My biggest jump? The first use of the infa-red. You'll know it when you see it too.

Saw the last 20 minutes or so of Galaxy Quest.
I missed my favourite line regarding Ego and Gasoline but I did re-appreciated the final shot of Matheser standing next to the Captain's chair as some hideously malformed version of a Picard "make it so" moment - the realisation of which had me chortling into my
