In my local rental shop the other day,I came across a Korean film called 'oldboy' it looked intriguing so I took it home. I really don't know how to describe this film, it starts with the kidnapping of some jerk who is celebrating the birthday of his young daughter. He wakes up in an apartment where he is kept prisoner for fifteen years, and then the film really starts. Having been fed on a diet of Hollywood pap for so long, this film blew me away. Intense acting combined with a plot line that creeps up on you with a jaw-dropping realisation of what's happening. It's the best film that I've seen this year.

want to see this...........
War of the Worlds (12A*)
Director: Steven Spielberg
Origin: United States
Year: 2005 Duration: 116m
Starring: Dakota Fanning, Tom Cruise
Ray Ferrier (Cruise) is a working class man living in New Jersey. He's estranged from his family, his life isn't in order, and he's too caught up with himself. But the unthinkable and, ultimately, the unexpected occurs when his small town life is shaken violently by the arrival of destructive alien intruders hell bent on destroying earth. As they maraud through the country in a wave of mass destruction and violence, Ray must come to the defence of his children and help save humanity from the force that threatens to destroy it. Spielberg's startling version of the HG Wells classic (via an intelligent screenplay by David Koepp, SPIDER-MAN) unsurprisingly boasts breathtaking special effects, however it is also a compelling parable about paranoia and human endeavour.

Batman begins. The best comic book movie since X2 and a brilliant re-invigoration of the bat-franchise.
Best bits: Seeing Batman through the fear-toxin (remind me or Lurtz from Fellowship of The Ring...)
and the teaser for the sequel "this one likes to leave a calling card..."
I'll watch War of The Worlds - and no doubt enjoy it - but part of me wishes they could have made a period movie but kept all the special effects. My favourite part of that book was the assault in the valley by the cannons and slowly, inevitably, each one falls silent.
Will there be cannons in this movie. I doubt it.

The War of the Worlds (Remastered Double CD Album) musical version ~ by Jeff Wayne is being plugged on TV at the moment. Which I add is nothing like the new film.

let's see - how can I put this?
I read that book during my lunch break at school, when I would find an empty classroom somewhere, sit on the floor in one of the far corners out of sight, and just demolish a book. The two I remember most doing with were 2001: A Space Odyessy and War of The Worlds.
And that bit with the cannons, I can remember it now, putting the book down, hearing in my imagination the last cannnon go quiet from the aliens poisonous mist and thinking - that'd be great to see one day that scene tilted not to scare the eye but to terrify the ear.
I know I now I'll never get it. It's a minor personal niggle. Like I said no doubt it's a good movie - and the advanced reviews all look pretty good. But no cannons.

Can't remember when it was set exactly but I know it was written in the late 1800's. Which is why apart from the 'suprise' ending (I wonder if the film will retain that?) the book also has the aspiration for man to achieve flight from alien technology. ('of course!', I realised turning back from the page with the copyright details - 'it was written before the Wright Brothers flew!') I loved the aspirational coda - and how it dated the book for me. Come to think of it - that's probably why I always think of War of The Worlds as something that is intrinsically old, dated even - and I would have loved to have seen that. A period War of The Worlds. I think I am just trepidacious. An updated verson for me, however good, won't ever be the book I read in my youth.

I've never read War of the Worlds, only listened to the album. But I was under the distinct impression that it was set in London. If it was, why then is the narrator depicted as coming from New Jersey? Or have I got it all wrong?

Yes, I think that everyone that loves cinema, will be waiting for this one, I mean, Wells, Cruise, Spielberg, what more do you want? I've heard many rumours regarding the screenplay, the most terrifying of which was that the "martians" turn out to be humans who left Earth long ago and have mutated due to the climatic and gravitational changes on Mars!!, I think that time travel was in there somewhere too. I sincerely hope that none of that is true. I wait in trepidation.
