May I conduct an experiment?

Ah, now HL, let me explain.

I have only a passing interest in Gormley. I am not familiar enough with his work to know the names of each of them and NOW I HAVE READ IT, I realise that I know this work and realise that it is one that I would like to see. Had I recognised it, I would have read your entry immediately.

The picture of AG shows a bit of framework behind him which I assumed was "Another Place". Had that been a picture of him on Crosby beach I would have been drawn in straight away. I have seen some of his work at the South Bank (the one of the same old figures scattered around on buildings near and far), on the banks of the Thames near the and in Derry / Londonderry. It would be nice though if he could move on. Even Van Gogh gave up painting the same vase of flowers after a while.

When I started writing this you were "in". Hope you are still here.

Fine, I'll let you off now you've recognised my genius smiley - tongueout

I can understand the antipathy for Gormley, he does seem to have a fixation with giant iron bodies.

Making Tea in the Australian Bush Guide ID: A896628 (Edited)

Great entry, interesting, fact filled and a nice length - plus a picture
5/5

The Big Rocking Horse, Gumeracha, South Australia - A20701216

A short, but interesting entry, could have used a little more on the local area, but then there might not ahve been.
3/4 out of 5

The Manchineel Tree - A2346400

A very vicious tree by all acounts, now i know what to do (stay 10km away apprently)

3/5

A681310 - How to Select a Small Animal as a Pet

Some things that i'd never thought about, on a topic that is quite likely to affect me
4/5

The Opera Web Browser - A685253
A good entry, though i'm not tempted due to my lack of web savvyness, would be good with frequent updates, i dont know if it has/had any.

I enjoyed your Teasel entry, Mina - I thought it was succinct and well-written. It's never possible to please everybody, though smiley - smiley

This thread needs reviving. So consider it revived!

I'll be reading five entries later on today.

A301889
Manicheism, Catharism and the Heresy of the Free Spirit (May 2009)

Well. Catharism says that it's "impossible to sin below the waist". Sounds like my kind of doctrine!

Very interesting, but much like lots of early period h2g2, it's a bit light. I could easily have read something twice as long.

4/5

A3724760
Aberdeen's Cafe Culture (March 2005)

This is what h2g2 should do best. Local knowledge. And this is a cracking entry. The only problem is that for all I know, it's six years out of date...

Shame I can't trust it.

3/5

A642098
How to Make a Pagan Ritual Altar (February 2002)

How did all these religious entries get into the guide? That'd never happen nowadays smiley - winkeye

Seems useful, but it's not really my cup of tea.

3/5

A63021359
Asterisms (April 2010)

I remember grossly offending GB at the time, as I thought these constallation entries seemed to be h2g2 doing Wikipedia. I've revised my opinions since then.

Well researched and well written. Even if I hate tables in entries.

4.5/5

A10696656
Checks and Balances in the US Federal Government

The title put me off. Then the MASSIVE PARAGRAPHS put me off.

But I stuck with it, And I think I learned something. Which is what the entry's all about, I suppose...

The Schaffermahlzeit in Bremen, Germany
A722503

A bit dry, though somewhat matching the apparent culture of the festival, something I'd never heard of though
3/5

Elite - the Original Computer Game
A711776

Again never heard of, but i do like early games and this sounds very good. Funny and informative

4.5/5

A Brief Introduction to Lower Limb Prosthetics
A8465574

Well laid out and interesting. With some parts on the topic that I'd never heard of

4/5

Lincoln, Nebraska, USA
A296165

An entry I'd read before, but nevertheless was still interesting to read. Bit more information would be good

3/5

Handy Polish Phrases
A2982314

Amusing, easy to understand, and for those with the interest - to learn. I dont have any polish friends to test this out on, but it would be good to have the chance.

5/5

A reasonable set in my view, something very out on the wing would be good

Thanks for finding this thread again. smiley - smiley

A311437 Hendy, Dyfed, Wales, UK Short and sweet. Would be interesting to know what has changed since it was published.

A1002844 The Speaking Clock in the UK

Has lots of interesting information, and lots of technical details which I only skimmed.

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Seems to be my geographical entry day today. Very funny entry. I won't ever go to Augusta. smiley - biggrin

A717572 Film Noir Gives a whole new (to me) meaning to the term Film Noir.

A2554157 Bedlam - The Hospital of St Mary of Bethlehem

Totally fascinating entry on a hospital for the mentally ill.

A741089 The Rise and Fall of Napster - I'm not interested in it, so didn't read it.

Um... I admit that this one passed me by. I do now know slightly more about it, but I don't feel like that's important. I think eleven years have taken their toll on that one.

A17955714 - Quality and Outcomes Framework for UK GPs - 22 January 2007
I admit the title put me off, but it shouldn't have done because it was something I didn't know anything about but now I feel better informed. smiley - smiley

A15847608 - The Rise and Fall of 'King-Size' Chocolate Bars (UK) - 03 November 2006
Huh, interesting. Would be interesting to see how things have changed since 2006 as well.

A669512 - Line Dancing - 15 January 2002
I loved this one! It almost made me think about taking it up.

A907463 - Travelling around Europe by Train - a Guide to Inter-Railing - 07 February 2003
It's long but interesting. smiley - smiley

4/5. Pretty good hit rate.

We could be really annoying - he'd have to update quicker and quicker the more we analysed - in theory, until every person on the site had commented on all 10,000 entries in the EG

May I conduct an experiment?

Post 356

benjaminpmoore

I think I would have to resort to Algebra.

H is the number of posts on the experiment thread

R is the number of researchers

E is the number of entries

c is a random number definied as being approximately h/10

Therefore

H=e*r

Entry written.

Ready for PR?

May I conduct an experiment?

Post 357

Nosebagbadger {Ace}

Well it is a grading system, and i have no idea what the rough grade is.

But if that could be found over say, a hundred posts. We could then use that equation to see whether the quality of entries was improving or declining over time (or indeed, the meanness of the researchers)

A25871141 - The Compact: An Anti-Consumerism Movement

Great entry from a talented writer. 4/5

A22766420 - Warfare in Ancient Athens

Well written but disappointingly short. Has good links, though. 3/5

A645419 - The City of Wells, the Cathedral and Bishop's Palace, Somerset, UK

Well written and quirky, but too heavy on the geology for my liking. 3.5/5

A592913 - Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev - Chemist

Great bio. Succinctly written. 4/5

A6556511 - Ogg Vorbis - Better Than Mp3?

A good attempt to make a technical subject accessible. There are one or two holes, though (e.g. who developed it) 3/5

Referencing http://h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/brunel/F19585?thread=8286283 As we're reviewing these entries, who would be prepared to suggest additional updates, corrections or crosslinks to pieces that need it? I think it'd be a great idea, especially as most it'd be five suggested alterations every time we carry out "the experiment"?
