Can the Canadian Borg prevent droughts? If so, maybe assimilation would be more than polite. smiley - smiley

Speaking of the Canadian Borg . . .

Come gather round people . . .

The last time I posted to this thread about two weeks ago, the Alberta Election Campaign was just kicking off.

As of today there are ten days left.

Any end in sight yet for the campaign down there, Paul? smiley - winkeye

Seriously, this has been something remembered here only by the very, very aged: an interesting provincial election campaign.smiley - laugh

The party leaders (minus one) held their TV debate last night. Reflecting the change that seems to be approaching: Right wing woman; less right wing woman; centrist brown guy; and the old white socialist guy. smiley - smiley

It looks like my neighbourhood is going to go for the socialist lady from down the street again -- the other parties had trouble finding anyone to run against her. Again, reflective of the times that are achanging, the Alberta NDP (the socialists) have a slate that is very nearly 50-50 men and women.

I'm hoping that the country wakes up on the 24th of April to something they haven't seen in four decades: change in Alberta.smiley - biggrin

"Any end in sight yet for the campaign down there, Paul?" [anhaga]

Mitt Romney seems to be the last tree standing. I have mixed feelings. As you might remember, he was the governor of Massachusetts for four years. He seems to be a genuinely nice guy. He took a huge risk with his health plan, which guaranteed health care for everyone. Obama used Romney's plan as a jumping-off
place for Obamacare. At the time, Romney said that he didn't want the Republican Party to be the party that wouldn't ever do anything constructive for the citizenry. People need health care. Responsible leaders need to find some way for that to happen.

So, I think Romney is the best of the bunch. He seems the least insane of the Republican field. I feel relieved that the radical right-wing is less likely to embarass the U.S. and push the world to the brink of something unspeakable.

The only downside is that I basically like what Obama is trying to do. He's not a great leader. i oppose him for being so glib about this policy of killing enemies without due process. It's a dangerous precedent, I think. He *says* that he won't assassinate any American citizens. Does he understand why this is not reassuring?

"Hi, my name is Obama, and I'm not going to kill you."

"Gee, thanks. That's the nicest thing anyone has ever said tome." smiley - blush

But, surely he's not the first President to have such a policy. I seem to remember certain attempts on a Mr. Castro.smiley - erm

I'm not sure I can speak to his glibness precedent, however.

You're probably right about his not being the first. Maybe I'me xpecting too much? I want him to be perfect, and no mere mortal can be perfect.

Every time I see him now I have to wonder what he learned
about being President that has taken the piss out of his
audacious Hope.

The last time I saw the Obama we know and love was when
he signed the Guatanamo closing order. I guess the real
whirled closed in on him shortly after that. His hair
turned grey very quickly. The burden must be intolerable.

But if America will give him another four years he may yet
prove he was the right choice. Well, of course, given the
other alternatives, he is still the only choice.

I think you're right. He's been pushed very hard by the rightwing zealots. If Romney gets in, he will be pushed by the rightwing, too.
I suppose, to some extent Romney agrees with them. Romney's great wealth is not going to sit well with people who have been pushed around by the bankers and tycoons. Wall Street is a fairly enthusiastic supporter of Romney. Outside Wall Street, there are a lot of people who consider Wall Street to be the enemy. What isn't appreciated is that a lot of Wall Street money has been going to Obama. With Romney in the picture, Obama will get much less.

On a different note:

Rumour is Mr. Robin Gibb has fallen into a coma. Whatever we may feel about the Disco Scare of the '70s, the Bee Gees were really a powerful pop music force for a long, long time. And, my memory of Robin . . .

That summer of '83 that I spent digging in the Roman dirt in the middle of nowhere ( https://maps.google.com/maps?q=san+giovanni+di+ruoti,+italy&hl=en&ll=40.737502,15.674572&spn=0.032387,0.084543&sll=43.20888,12.361778&sspn=7.974159,21.643066&hnear=San+Giovanni,+Ruoti+Potenza,+Basilicata,+Italy&t=h&z=14&layer=c&cbll=40.73752,15.674432&panoid=1gaH3_1PLGNVnYKrUPNMpQ&cbp=12,186.5,,0,0.09 those who have been to my blogsmiley - winkeye will recognize the mountain in the distance in that streetview view), South Italy had as its soundtrack, blared from every shop, bistro and home . . .

Disco "scare?" I remember going to some discos during the 70s. It was fun! liked the Village People, and Barry Manilow. I'd prefer them to rap and hip hop, but I don't have a choice. The popular taste has moved on, and I'm pretty much irrelevant.

Anglo popping in.

Just a message in case you haven't seen it that zoomer made a journal, (he doesn't make many, unlike me), that is quite deep personally to do with his life.

I thought it might be nice for him to get a bit of input from a few..serious or otherwise.

Just a heads up really. Not telling anyone what to do.
