3dots: on twitter it makes sense because the @name feature allows to automatically link to the account of the named person. Everywhere else, you are right.

(Or not? Is anybody confused as to whom I'm replying to? smiley - winkeye)

<> This is the QI: Fact of the Day from the BBC homepage.

It's immediately followed up with the sentence <>

So dermatoglyphics (15 letters) is longer than uncopyrightable (15 letters)?

For some reason this really annoyed me, almost to the point of non-pettiness.

Deb smiley - cheerup

PH today and most days at work. When we get food from the canteen, they serve it in polystyrene containers. Eating out of these containers is most unpleasant and the worst thing is, you can't reach round it to type your hootoo lunch-hour posts. The lid is as big as the bottom, obviously and takes up a huge space on the desk.

I think I'll put my food on a plate tomorrow. The unthinkable alternative would be not to go on line in the lunch break.

Shops who APPEAR to be helpful by putting 'per kilo' comparisons on their shelf edges and then mix up the units. Kilo / 100g comparisons are readily sorted out, but how can your ordinary shopper compare Stilton at £8.31 per kilo and £3.67 per lb.

Petty hate; the current trend for saturating websites with drop-down menus that obscure whatever it was you were trying to click, if the mouse drifts within a mile of it. It is really really irritating. Why is it so hard for people to click on what they want to use rather than being raped by the ferkin things. smiley - erm

Petty Hate or Petty Temptation? smiley - erm

Mrs swl has had an emergency-type tranceiver thingy installed. In the event of her having medical problems when I'm not around, she has a button thingy on a pendant she can press which will instantly summon elite NHS ninja-nurses who will arrive within seconds in black helicopters.

Or somesuch.

Anyway, there's a big white box on the wall now, connected to the phone line and on the big white box is a BIG RED BUTTON smiley - erm

What is it about BIG RED BUTTONS that makes me so, so tempted to push them?

Am I really going to have to resist temptation every single time I pass that BIG RED BUTTON?

Absolutely, winnoch. And when you *do* want to click on one of the options on the damn things, if you move the cursor 1mm off the drop-down box it disappears. Leaving the cursor at the other side of the screen.

I was writing a blog yesterday about the Google Doodles (thanks to somebody on hootoo who posted a while back that Google archives their special logos - www.google.com/logos).

When the logo was for the anniversary of the birth of someone who is long dead (Charlie Chaplin, Jules Verne etc) they referred to the date as, for example, the '183rd birthday of Jules Verne'.

Um, no.

I fell in love with the Les Paul Google doodle they had. That, and the balls that did not like your mouse, topped it for me!

Petty hate: why are my exam results so late? I want them now, thanks; everyone else is getting theirs before we do! I wanna know if I'm clear to go away next year- and if I'm not.
