"PH: when I download stuff. Argh. I had set downloaded stuff to automatically go into the Downloads folder so I could download whatever and sort through it when I have time. Now it does not, it just goes into some obscure folder buried under layers of whatever- I have to click “show containing folder” to find it. Does anyone know how I can set this right?

I use Windows Vista and recently updated my AVG virus protection."

If my memory serves me right I got rid of AVG on my old Vista computer, partly because it was so slow and partly because I think it started deleting all my downloads. Doing a search for "AVG Vista downloads disappear" finds a few other people with a similar issue.

I think my solution was to move to Avast! antivirus which is also free and the resident scanner didn't seem to be slowing everything up quite so much.

You can choose download location in your browser options. Or you can choose 'ask me where to download every time'.

Anna, its probably your browser settings thats choosing where your downloads ends up. I gave up on IE ages ago so don't know what settings you'd have to change in that. If you use Firefox then simply go into Options from the browser menu.

I changed the location to the desktop to see if that makes any difference for the moment. It was set for to download to the Download folder anyway, but why it was not appearing in there, I have no idea.

Thought Saturday night TV couldn't get worse than "Sing If You Can" but the BBC are really plumbing the depths with "Don't Scare the Hare" ...

Don't Scare the Hare? Yup, that's certainly scraping the bottom of the barrel; I think they might have scraped through it with that one.

PH: my "speak out when you need it" reflex has switched off, I think. I am not pleased!

Recurring Petty Hate: People who don't give enough thought to packaging. I recently visited Stonehenge and bought a souvenir magnet, which was stuck to a piece of card. OK, limited packaging and it's biodegradable. However, the magnet was stuck to the card with two thick pads. When I tried to remove the magnet from the card, the pads came with the magnet and were very hard to remove. In fact, some of the pad is still there, firmly fixed. Yes, I have some 'Sticky Stuff Remover', but I shouldn't have to use it.smiley - cross

Buying a new car.

I really have no interest in cars but have to have one since my job depends on it.

First I have to find one that is sensibly priced.

Then test drive. And then the salesman asks, 'How was it for you then?' ('It is a car. It goes. I am really disinterested' - I don't expect them to understand).

Then I have to sell my old one - normally a trade in for next to nothing (I have to get rid - it prolongs the agony selling it privately).

Then I have to pay for it forever.

Then when I leave it in a car park people start to assault it. My current car has two significant dings in the bodywork - both done in supermarket car parks. A bent trim - ditto, and any number of other bruises and scratches - mostly ditto. It is covered in marks and scratches that other people have done. I have made key scratches round the locks but that's it.

Does anyone make a rubber car?

PP

p.s. I have just read that back. Boy do I sound grumpy! The sooner this is all over the better and then I can get on not thinking about cars!

I can't believe that you would LET me drive a 'shake that ass' Renault Megane! I said that I was disinterested. NOT away with the fairies!

PP, I was rather thinking about the first model Fiat Sclerosis (or was that called Multiple)...gimme two wheels anytime, in any weather.

Ah the Sclerosis. I did SEE one of those. I joked with the salesman that he must have had it in the showroom for YEARS since NOBODY would buy one of them.

He wasn't amused.

Perhaps I was right.

Top Gear rated it as the most versatile family car ever built - but you need a lot of straight ahead vision to avoid the looks you get when driving one. What about a Mahindra for you?

Love, get yourself one - buy from someone academic! Students know about survival on a handful of pennies, and a bike model that transported one bloke to his degree will still be good enough for yours.
In latter decades the Manure Pump (Honda) and the Won´t Start Won´t Stop (Yamaha) were known to be reliable friends - ask around for what´s up nowadays.

Aye, we do, but what would I do with my walking frame? I need to bring it everywhere with me cos I need it to move. Still would love one though.
