So What brought you all to H2G2?
Dancing Ermine Posted Oct 19, 1999
I just signed up a couple of days ago. I am a university student with an inordinate amount of free time and free access to the internet. I was bored one day whilst surfing about the net and put a search for the site in. I had heard about it after watching Tommorrow's World and thought it was a good idea. I am a small fan of DNA, I have read most of the *trilogy* and the idea of the guide appeals to me. I have already enjoyed looking for things that haven't been written about and adding my own work, as a result, I have had to physically drag myself away for meal breaks and lectures, it is becoming rather addictive .

I was 14 years old, and someone I new was reading a book that involved a rubber-ducking-playing, starship Captain who had spent almost 4 years in a bath tub. Of course, I had to check it out...
Then I got hooked...
Five years later I acquired my own computer and an internet connection. During my visits to http://www.douglasadams.com I happened to stumble onto this thing called h2g2, and thought, "Why not? Can you think of a better way to waste your time?"
So here I am....

Hi Peta
I saw Douglas Adams on an interview on this new TV-channel we´ve got here in Norway, Metropol. I was really embaresed on the hosts behalf, ´couse he kept calling the books "the Hich-Hikers Guide to the Universe"! Unbelievebly bad research! Well, Mr Adams told the viewers to check out this h2g2 page, and I did what the boss told me to! Great fun, and very handy pages!

Same as a few other people, I have just started Uni and so I am quite new on the Web. A while ago I read HHGTTG and was really taken p by the Idea of universal guide. Then I saw the article in the PC World with the interview with Mr Adams, which mentioned the website, so I checked it out, and as a result I am quite frequent visitor now.

About 17 years ago (maybe more) I read 'The restaurant.... ' and once I'd stopped laughing at the bit with drawing out the scrabble letters, a thought occurred to me that made me laugh even more. I've mentioned it to various people since and NEVER MET ANYONE who already knew what I was talking about. I was searching the web to finally find out if it was deliberate or an accident that 6 x 9 REALLY DOES = 42 if you count in base 13
6 x 9 = 54 = (5 x 10) + (4 x 1) = 50 + 4 base 10
6 x 9 = 42 = (4 x 13) + (2 x 1) = 52 + 2 base 13
It would be somehow comforting to know that I am not the only one burdened with this awful knowledge

Yes, I've heard that from several sources--newsgroups and the like. I've also read DNA's denial that it has any significance...but we can dream, can't we?

Thank you, that's wonderful - I can finally drop the subject...
unless you're crying wolf

No, I never cry wolf...that would be kind of redundant since I _am_ one.... (do you know Latin by any chance?)
But seriously, I never kid around with people who are looking for a serious answer. Everything I wrote is true.

is it true that wolves cannot bark?

How did you put those pictures on your home page?
I've got a bitmap and I'm not afraid to use it!

I heard an interview with DNA on BBC Radio 4 a few months ago and he mentioned H2G2 then which co-incided with the delivery of our "new toy" and subsequent internet connection. (Life is just one large co-incidence!) Anyhow - I've been here more or less ever since although from time to time I've drifted to other sites I have found myself being drawn back as there's nothing else quite like this place!

Thanks - waving your mouse over the dancing baby randomly selects some music - there's a pulldown list nearby if you'd rather make your own selection
have fun

I havn't bothered reading everything up there yet, I'll do it later.
I came here because Focus (the boffin science magazine in the UK) made a brief point about mentioning h2g2's excistance. I was bored and decided it would be a nice way to kill some time, to vist this site.
