Mais, que veut dire 'already seen' précisement?
Narapoia Posted Nov 12, 2002
Bit harsh on the poor old backlog, I think.
I think it manages to give a flavour of our combined efforts to search for the Truth, don't you?
Even if it has yet to give any indication whatsoever about what "deja vu" might mean, but I don't think we need to hold that against it.

Literally, "deja vu" means "already seen"

Narapoia - does "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition" mean nothing to you?
Spiff - you and I must be getting old well, moi, anyway.

Of course it does, TC!
But what's that got to do with the price of eggs and the meaning of "deja vu"??!!

Maybe the sum formerly known as Researcher 204XXX started reading the backlog, but got this eery feeling that they'd already read it somewhere before...

Already read. Funny how some phrases get used more than others. Perhaps it could be adopted for old postings or e-mails. On second thoughts there's an icon for that already and pictures...

*Perhaps it could be adopted for old postings or e-mails.*
Well no. It could only be used if you had the spooky sense that you had already read a posting when reading it for the first time, surely?
So, anyone any idea if there's a neat phrase, possibly in a foreign language (to make it sound more edjumicated) to describe the feeling that you've experienced a situation before, even though you know you can't have done?

Perhaps the French Knight would be kind enough to answer a question...
Is the meaning of this phrase in French just the literal meaning or has it the same nuances as in English usage?
Did you notice how I sneaked another adopted French word in there?!!
Mais, que veut dire 'already seen' précisement?
Loup Dargent Posted Nov 13, 2002
which one?"...
question... usage... phrase... or nuances?!...
i think spiff mentioned before [see backlog pleaaaaaase...] that actually "deja vu" would be more an english expression than french...
tho' we do have "deja vu" experiences too... maybe we use the full sentence like "i feel i've already experienced/seen/said that before..." which roughly translated in french would be:
"j'ai l'impression d'avoir deja experience/vu/dit ca..."
and the english language would have taken the two words "deja" and "vu" out of a wonderful and very explicit french expression and assimilated them as "deja vu"...
that's my explanation and i will stick to it...
[dear moderator: i had to use a french sentence to illustrate the point i was making... please be gentle with it...]

Oops, I meant nuances, the others are so common in English I didn't notice their French origins..
My first entry to this conversation which was modded was incorrect and not what I intended to say.
(I had just hopped over from a Franglais thread). It was still modded when I looked a few minutes ago.
