realising that i could now conceivably be the mother to our first year students (ie, i'm 13 years older than most of them) and it aint gonna get any better. ... and when you like art school boys that's a problem.

Even this thread doesn't make me feel old.
I can still listen to the Damned and/or Gary Numan (my first musical loves), but I don't feel old listening to the Sugarbabes, just oddly vindicated. But I don't listen to them all that much. My cd collection is still growing and evolving. I'm going through a major reggae/north african phase, and whilst it may not be nu-metal, it still sounds new to me.
Nostalgia is surefire way to old age, in my opinion. I don't keep old photo's, and have little that is tied to specific places, times or people. Tomorrow is a new day with new experiences and new ideas.
I have a theory that people start getting old when they stop saying 'I heard a great new record the other day'. John Peel once said he could imagine nothing worse than waking up in twenty years time and still be listening to the same old s**t he was listening to today, or worse yet, yesterday. I think he has a point, and not just about music.

Driving my '76 chevy, which I bought new, in for an oil change, and the kid says he doesn't know how to drive a column shift. So I had to pull it into the bay. Then I had to open the hood for him.

Oh yeah! I had one like that. We had an official form to fill in and I helped a girl sort out what had to go in it and sent her off to fill it in on the typewriter. She gaped : She had no idea how to use a typewriter! (age 22, she was)

Me too. A customer once asked me to send one of the girls to get hom half a pound of butter. She took ages. Came back apologising for having had to go to the deli and have it weighed 'cos she didn't know what half a pound was.
When are we getting the smiley?

Typewriters, right - we still have one in the closet, I think I could work it if I had to.
I had the reverse experience a few years back. I was in a club buying tickets to an upcoming concert. The bartender looked at his computer and said the first (smoke-free) show was full, did I want tickets to the second show? I asked for a phone to call my wife, he handed me his cell phone. I looked at it like it was a phaser. Recently I dropped my wife off for an appointment, planning to pick her up afterward. She loaned me her cell phone so she could call me, and had to explain how to work it.

Sometimes I feel old - at 17...
I have a tendency to think of George Orwell every time someone mentions 'Big Brother'. I read Nineteen Eighty-Four... er... five or six years ago now, and despite the omnipresence of the TV show, I still associate the phrase primarily with the book.
I do this kind of thing a lot....

The title of this thread should be "What makes you realise you're not as young as you think you are!"
For me it was having to explain who the Two Ronnies were to a kid doing work experience as a runner (he had to go and buy a video with that classic "Four Candles" sketch)
Realising my nephew could legally join the army next year.
Having to explain to my friends kids that I didn't have a computer when I was their age because they hadn't been invented yet (finally appreciating what my Grandma and Aunty always used to say to me about television)
Also hearing Kate on Big Brother ask who "The Who" were!!
The list goes on...

Is it just me or are this lot pretty thick? After all, two have escaped already!! Boring, boring people.

This poor senile old granny got a text message on my mobile today (well, actually it was sent 3 days ago but I didn't turn the thing on till today) and finally managed to work out how to read it but not how to text a reply.
Ended up having to leave a voicemail.
Would someone pass the Saga brochure and the Stannah stairlifts info please?

*starts to feel very cosy in this conversation* I don't feel old anyway"... I only got quite upset yesterday. A friend of my boyfriend (age 22) almost couldn't believe that he's sharing his life with me (age 37), because "You're much too old". Anyway, she doesn't actually know much about life, so, why should we care?

If your boufriend doesn't think you're too old, and you don't think you're too old, then you're NOT too old. The only opinions that matter on this are yours and his.
