Please tell me "what planet do you guys live on"? This conversation is absolute mumbo jumbo, non-sensical babble. You clearly have far too much time on your hands

The H2G2 Editors

We would like to remind Researchers that Posting in Non-English languages is against the House Rules.

The House Rules state: "Postings or entries containing languages other than English may be removed". To avoid this happening, please post an English translation of your text in the same Posting. Please see this conversation - F77636?thread=192242 - if you would like more information.

Thanks,
The h2g2 Editors

Well - nearly 850 before they noticed isn't bad. Although, if I remember, a few were "removed" back along the line

Hello! Terri here; I use the same computer as smiley - elf & he's kindly logged off so I can stick my oar in.

Yes, those of us who have been on "hootoo" a while know that conversations which are TOTALLY in a language other than English are not allowed without a translation.

h2g2 has recently started to use a system of "self-moderation"; which means that rather than every posting having to go to the moderators before being sent, Researchers themselves take the responsibility for alerting the moderators by pressing the "Yikes" button if they feel a posting contravenes the House Rules. I think I speak for almosr everyone on hootoo when I say that this system seems to be working & it would be a great shame for all if it reverted to the previous system.

The "Let's parlez Franglais" thread has not, as far as I am aware, so far needed to be moderated; & as it is composed of a lighthearted mélange (mix) of French & English, the actual content usually requires little translation (grammar correction in both languages certainment (certainly) though!)
--the above sentence illustrates perfectly the problems of providing a translation within a post such as this (I have enough trouble with brackets at the best of times!); & would completely destroy the character of a thread which is providing fun to a lot of people, "rosbifs" (English persons) & "frogs" (French persons) alike.

So perhaps in view of the possible influx of more "newbies" than usual due to publicity in the recent British press, we should all make an effort to ensure the content of this thread contains more English than French; but PLEASE don't make us translate every word.

smiley - sorryEditors, I realise that you may be rather more "on alert" than usual, hope this helps.

By the way, 'Allo 'Allo, I'm an Ace, amongst other things, which means I try to help those new to hootoo, if you'd like any help, please reply via this thread or click on my highlighted nickname at the top of this posting to go to my Personal Space & leave a message (I can't go to yours 'cos you've not yet put anything in your intro! Even "hi" will do, opens up your page so that people know how to contact you.)

smiley - cheers

Mechants franglophones!

(translation: naughty people speaking half french half english garbled language)

Si nous ne parlons pas anglais, qu'est-ce qu'on parle alors - ce n'est pas le francais de Voltaire, that's for sure!

(translation - surely any one who speaks English must be able to get a fair idea of the contents of this thread? smiley - erm It's not exactly the Queen's French, if you get my drift...

Bonne said, my good homme!
Je suis trés peeved off that mon homme seems, peut être to be being victimised pour his nationality. Je déteste le racisme in any form & je thought my reply above would have helped. obviously not, since this thread now seems to be being retro-actively gone through avec un fine (in FRENCH that word apparently means something like thin) toothcomb.

Je have put a lot of time & effort into trying to get GOOD publicity for this site, je suis trés smiley - grr that it seems to have been wasted.
I am now left wondering just how careful we have to be; one of my previous convos on this thread contained the word "bl**dy" (without *s); will this get "yikes"ed too? We're going to have a very busy email post in this maison (HOUSE) at this rate!

Hope you get a chance to read this!

i thought we would not go to that road: where some researchers would hunt for threads in foreign languages to yike!!!!...

this is a designated thread for a mixure of english and french... not _even_ a foreign language...

furthermore the subject of the thread says it all... no-one can have accessed this thread by accident... now of course i will have to yikes any posting with foreign words such as conversation, discussion, guide etc...

i won't reply to a comment made by a researcher about "too much time on our hands" [which hasn't be moderated even so it could be seen as flaming] as it has nothing to do with the problem happening now...

sorry but i have doubts on the reasons why these posts were yiked... as i said whoever was annoyed by the fact that there were foreign words in this thread must have known what to expect in the first place...

a very unhappy franglophile...

forgot to point out that this thread was a great example of "entente cordiale" between people from different nations... i would have thought that _that_ should be encouraged...

oh and "entente cordiale" is used in publications in english BTW... just in case someone had an urge to yikes this posting...

yep... "too much time on our hands" would mean what exactly?!... and to a point so what?!... is this researcher going to post the same comment in some very active ask h2g2 threads?!...

i don't think so somehow...smiley - cross

To the moderators and all Franglais users,

I seem to know that just before I joined h2g2 (and, soon after, the Franglais thread), the problem had already occured. I also thought that it had been solved.

Loup quite rightly points the fact that the thread's title is clear enough. It seems unlikely that a researcher could end up here by accident...

Using Franglais as a language is mostly a form of humour. Now, can someone tell me what the point of a Franglais thread where no French words are used would be?

Postings in this thread are written with consideration. It is obvious that everyone here endeavours to make sure that they are designed to be understood by researchers with a very limited command of French language (if any!).

If someone with no French at all may find it slightly confusing to start with, a little bit of common sense (to fill the gaps) is usually enough to get a solid grasp of what's going on.

A quick look by someone who doesn't know a word of French but is curious and not here to create trouble should be more than enough to assess that no one here is being rude or out of order.

I really don't see what the problem is.
