Damn, I picked a fine time to give up chasing woolly temptresses!
Dunno where the name came from, but I settled for the booneristic speetle explanation when I was offered the chance of my own glass case in the Museum. If Jeremy Bentham can do it....

Cheerful Dragon Posted Jun 18, 2001
My nickname comes from my Chinese horoscope sign. I discovered, when I was about 12 years old, that I was born in the year of the Dragon and I've been into dragons ever since. The 'Cheerful' part comes from a book on the year of the Dragon that I was given some time ago. Apparently, I was born in the year of Chia Ch'en, or Cheerful Dragon.
So now you know!

In deference to the incomparable diversity of language that the guys at the Oxford Dictionary continue to provide, and in the hope of forgiveness and understanding - changed my name to something perhaps more appropriate?
Cheers - formerly kidkitsch but still !

Emily 'Twa Bui' Ultramarine Posted Sep 17, 2001
Emily - because it's my real name, and without my first given name it just doesn't feel like me.
Ultramarine - because it's an intelligent shade of the colour blue. That and I'm a painter of sorts.
La Reine des Poissons Rouges - well, I like goldfish.
DoG - 'Daughter of God'. A long time ago, in a long, long thread, I performed some damned good miracles - like turning several people female, for instance.

dimples Posted Sep 18, 2001
Dimples is an actual nickname given to me by someone who was extremely drunk and was trying to compliment the dimples on my cheeks(the ones on my face..) He said, slurring his words "You have really nice nipples". He then protested he meant to say "dimples" and everyone involved in the event has called me dimples to this day. So, everytime I see it, it gives me a grin.

Rainbow Posted Sep 18, 2001
When I first joined h2g2 in July last year I was just 'SLUG' - a name chosen partly because my garden is infested with huge slugs (which also come into the house), and also because it reflected my depressed state of mind.
A surprising number of fellow h2g2 members suggested if I changed it, it would brighten my life up (and even posted a list of suggestions).
I decided upon 'RAINBOW' - i.e. the sun shining through the rain. However, since then my life has gone from bad to worse and so until it improves I shall still retain the 'Slug no Longer' part!!

Silverfish Posted Sep 18, 2001
Silverfish comes from Goldfinger, in two easy stages. Firstly, I thought Bronzefinger. In fact, on another website I am registered as Bronzefinger. Then I decided that I wanted something a bit different. I thought again, and thought Silverfinger. I then came up with Silverfish, as that would be a bit more original.

unremarkable: Lurker, OMFC, LPAS Posted Sep 18, 2001
my nickname... well, unremarkable... never really one to stand out in a crowd. brown hair, eyes, 5'11" etc. nothing about me yells "over here!" or anything.
lurker, cause i am. <~~>
OMFC - that mark seems like a nice guy.
and LPAS - Lord Protector of Awkward Silence. Awkward silence follows me like a shroud of mist. its pretty funny after a while and sometimes its pretty frustrating

Researcher 179388 Posted Sep 18, 2001
I used to play Diablo over the LAN at home with my sons. Because my aim was hopeless I spent half the game running around getting resuscitation scrolls to revive my sons' characters with. So when I created a new character I called him Caerlyss (Caer rhymes with fire in Welsh and means castle) but it sounded like careless to those who didn't know.
Then I was introduced to the game on line and wanted a name for my amazon, wynn is often added to names in Wales and as far as I know doesn't actually mean anything. Hence Caerwynn.
I would like to add that I never 'pk'ed online and it was only ever accidental at home.
You wanted the long explanation didn't you?

The longer, the better, and the more, the merrier!
Thank you all above for re-activating this thread.
As I said in the original posting "a rose is just a rose - but a rose with Ultramarine dimples - now there's something to talk about!"
Well actually I didn't say that ..but you know what I mean!
thanks

DoctorGonzo Posted Sep 18, 2001
My name (for those who don't know) is absolutely nothing to do with the Muppets. It's the name of a character in Hunter S Thompson's 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'. Anyone who says such things as 'As your lawyer, I advise you to have another drink' demands respect. And, as I say on my user space, the thieving of the name is utterly shameless.
The lack of a space is a result of Aber-MUDding, where names are all one word. And the little comments after my name are just that - whatever comes into my head, when the fancy takes me. Currently it's 'he's lampin', he's lampin', he's cold cold lampin'', which is from a Public Enemy song, previous ones include 'Self-styled Hipster Christ' from a Tom Wolfe book (thanks again, agcBen), and 'I was hell, sarcastic silver swell' from an REM song. It never really means anything, I just like something that sounds good.

Marjin, After a long time of procrastination back lurking Posted Sep 18, 2001
When I joined the guide, I could not decide on a name I liked. Also I thought it a bit against the rules to impersonate someone else by using a name from history, or from a book. So I kept my own.
Maybe I will change it in the future, But then I probably wil keep in the old name with 'formerly' or something like that.
And, as I posted somewhere else, a with another name has thorns just as sharp!

Silverfish - I was under the impression that you were named after the alchemist in Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld' series. Now I know that you are not, which just shows me how easy it is to be wrong these days.

Thanks Emily! That's what this thread is all about.
We all make assumptions when we see people's nicknames, a first impression based on our own experience. Oh, I made some bad guesses when I first came here and I was usually way off the mark!
So I began to wonder about all the people who might have very clever, or very meaningful names and they never know that no-one-else-gets-it because people tend not to ask such a personal question.
The fact that I might have thought you were a US Marine just proves how badly we sometimes get it wrong. Now I know you are a girl, a colour and have an oriental mystery ..a completely different picture than the gung-ho ultra-Marine I might otherwise have imagined.
Not that I did, but you get the idea.

Lady in a tree Posted Sep 18, 2001
I have the explanation of my name in my intro but for those who cannot be bothered to look this is wot it sez..
"The name comes from a cute wav I found. It is Wakko from the Animaniacs saying "Hello Lady in the tree". I liked it and used it as my e-mail notification sound."
Although as to why I used it as a nickname, who knows? I must've got an e-mail just before registering.
When I first started reading these conversations and looked at the names I found it all quite daunting. I also thought you were all a bunch of dweeby / trekky / sci-fi nerds because of the names. I have of course changed my outlook on that one - I know it's not everyone!!!

Ek* this space intentionally left blank *ki Posted Sep 19, 2001
As if it isn't glaringly obvious - Ekki Ekki Ekki F'tang Hala Hala Hala Bah-Whing comes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail - you know when the Knights who say Ni, rename themselves, post-shrubbery, as the Knights who say Ekki Ekki ...
Having said that, there's an MP sketch in which the silly party candidates name is Simon Phillips Bong ole Biscuit Barrell Ekki Ekki Ekki F'tang and various other oddities so it's a bit of both I suppose ... I was originally called Vice Pope Eric (also Python) but it wasn't me.
Why I chose it, well, it was the fact that it wasn't so much a name as a collection of ridiculous noises, although as some will be aware I generally answer to one of the Ekki's ... haven't decided which though.
Whether it says much about me I don't know. There's something about a nickname though. Tells you how you know someone and in what capacity - call yourself a different name in different situations so that when someone comes rushing up and says "Hey, I know you, you're Chetnole Cuthbertson and the Bonkers Bazuki Player",you can say, "Hey, how've you been. Great to meet you at Matts party ..."
So there ... wibble

Don't know whether I've said this already 'cos I'm diclsexy - if I have just throw summat at me (an old boot's traditional) to stop the caterwauling...
I chose Trillian for my nickname, but - being slicdexy - I accidentally spelt it Trillion.
Then people kept confusing me with Trillian's Child *Waves in case TC's around* so I changed it to The Entity Formerly Known As Trillion.
During the Great Vogon Detour Argon0 shortened it to Tefkat, and since my favourite people have called me Madam Kat for over 25 years it seemed like a good name to keep.
*Wonders why everyone's fallen asleep*

Silverfish, I thought you were musing on the top Scottish indie-thrash-punk type band from the early 90s - they had songs like "Total F***ing ***hole", "F***ing Strange Way To Get Attention" and "Big Bad Baby Pig Squeal" with singer Lesley Rankine's lyrics (repeat)
"Hips, T*ts, Lips, Power!"
back in the days when Girl Power was real Girl Power.
They split up unfortunately, and the singer became Ruby, now doing a trip-hop thing which is alright but lacks the punch of Silverfish. She's got a new album out called "Short-Staffed at the Gene Pool".
A top band, sorely missed. Great name.
