I just think it's funny that the in-law, when asked for the bathroom, actually showed her to the bathroom not the toilet. Were they expecting her to just randomly have a bath??

Well that's the story as related to me, about an aquaintance's niece. I guess she was just extremely nervous and trying to be "polite". Personally, I would have used the bath or shower recess ... oh well, we all make silly mistakes.

The most embarrasing thing that happened to me was while I was at school. I was sitting around chatting with some friends and a teacher. I should explain that I have very long slender fingers. The teacher turned to me and said (as I heard it): "You have real penis fingers". I was mortified and just subsided into incoherence. I never forgot it, and would look at my hands ocassionally and wonder where his head was at. Eventually, not long ago, I realized that he actually said "Pianist's fingers" smiley - wah

I accidentally called a teacher "Mum" in front of the whole class.

(This is not the most embarassing thing to happen to me - I've already posted that).

965 and 966 don't really sound very healthy when I think about it.

It happens to many kids.

Even when I was in primary school, I remember being embarrassed for someone else - something which has plagued me ever since.

We were about age 6. A boy was looking out of the window, and suddenly realised that the clouds were being pushed along by the wind. Well, not quite, because he suddenly exclaimed in terror: "The sky's moving!"

I remembered this because this same boy also called the teacher "Mum" once. On that occasion he was embarrassed himself, though.

Another boy in my class once asked me "How do you spell beyavel?" I realised he meant "be able" but was so shocked by the fact that he had no idea, I refused to answer and have never forgotten how embarrassed I felt. Especially that he thought I'd know. The most embarrassing thing was that he was the son of one of the richest families in the town and would probably inherit a world-reknowned business. We must have been about 9 at the time.

I'd imagine calling the teacher Mum is a fairly common thing. I know I did it once or twice as a kid.

You see teachers as figures of authority, and after your parents, they're the ones you're supposed to obey most, so no wonder you call them mum or dad.
Now calling my husband, whose name is Micahel, "Ryan", (our baby's name is Ryan), repeatedly, is a bit worrying. Do I think he's a baby? Sometimes...

Everybody does that - well I know I do, my Mum does, My GF does...

not call their husbands Ryan of course but get names mixed up... So far I've been called by my Brothers name (Mum), by all three of our cats names (GF), by my Dads (Mum), by a colleagues name (Boss), etc...

(I have even mixed up our Son's name with a colleagues name - but I was tired, and they do sound very similar...)

I called my teacher 'mum' in about year nine, but turned it into an american style 'ma'am'.
