* uhm ..by the ears...? *
RE: vacuum.
True a hoover vacuum is not a true vacuum.
It is more precisely, and perhaps we should begin calling it, merely vacuous.

Yep. Traffic lights are commonly referred to as "stop lights" out here in America. The simple and pragmatic reason for our usage of the term is that it's what our parents and/or grandparents called 'em. As to the reason why they call them stop lights, I think it's because you spend most of your time at them when you're ... well, stopped.
In the USA during the heady days of the first major proliferation of personal automobiles, this often happened while there was no one around for miles and miles, leading to a frustrating wait while the open road shimmers in the distance, beckoning to you with the promise of great fun and high adventure behind the wheel of your own, fine, automobile. Indeed, many intersections still have stop lights that one seems to spend more time "stopped" at rather than "going" through, particularly older ones without the traffic detectors or those that are set deliberately to control speed.

The question's too woolly to answer.
God - my first message sent in three months and it's pathetic.

Oh I should add something... how about 'emergency'? (I've used this before somewhere...) If the root word of emergency is 'emerge', how come it's something you go into rather than come out of?

why do people almost always refer to God as He or He/She, when gender is really irrelevant, and possibly non-existant in this case? it makes sense for some religions (Greek), but not for Christianity, since that one is monotheistic(is that even a word? but i hope you know what i mean.).

Not only is 'monotheistic' a word, it is the single most important new concept in man's fall from grace. Around the same time that the ancients were beginning to write things down and draw pictures of stuff some shrewd wag came up with the idea that all the gods could be represented by one god (mono - theism). This was (as far as we know) first introduced in Egypt and the One-God was represented by the sun (later also known as Apollo and most recently as the Happy Face).
By the time of the Greeks however, most of the 'other' gods were back in power too and Apollo shared the Universe with an entire pantheon of 'others', as it should be.
But, the idea of 'one god' (monotheism) was perpetuated by the Hebrews (a souvenir they took from Egypt perhaps) and, subsequently, the Christians, who had a bit of a relapse with this trinity business, but have never really gotten back to a more diverse and realistic view of the cosmos...
And while I'm ranting, let me note that A-theism means 'without a god' and pan-theism has nothing to do with a good fry up.

i think the concept of many gods/goddesses is more beleivable anyway because of all the little foibles that MUST have been perpetrated by a committee.
