My movie critique, mere minutes after having seen it:
The opening sequence, though a bit lengthy, was spectacular! I'm still debating whether I like the way Sauron was personified, but I can live with it.
The scenery was the most astounding, absolutely brilliant I have ever seen! Even better than my imagination!
The screeching of the Nazgul was a bit annoying.
Galadriel and Lothlorien... I'm still not sure about this one. Galadriel was not at all what I expected, and the scene at the mirror will probably give me nightmares.
One thing that bothers me, for those who haven't read the books... The names of the members of the company were rarely used. I think Legolas' name only came up two times...even Aragorn/Strider was scarcely used.
The Balrog and the end of the journey through Moria, captured very well! The only questionable thing is the cave troll...
Saruman working for Sauron--I don't like it, but it works well for the movies.
Arwen. What can I say? I was disappointed with the scene at the Ford.
What happened to Narsil/Anduril? Was Aragorn really carrying it in Moria?
The Falls of Rauros--once again, spectacular job! Not quite how it was in the book, and it changes Aragorn's character, but it captured the moment quite well.
The Horn call of Boromir?! The most humorous moment in the entire movie!! Can we say tugboat?!
All in all, I was sad to see some of the scenes which were left out. There were a few recognizable lines that were uttered out of place. But, the grandeur of the movie, and the limited time PJ had to work with, more than make up for it. I walked away from the movie thrilled and anticipating next Christmas!!

I thought it was great.
I actually thought that the screeching was excellent. I mean, the whole point is to make the most hideous noise possible. That noise was pretty hideous.
Arwen, of course. GAG and SCREAM. Its truly horrible.
I really like the way they showed the felling of the trees in Orthanc. Nice touch there.
I want to go to New Zealand and never come back.
Also, I thought that Borimir (who I never really identified with in the book) was amazing. He was truly able to represent the desire to do good, coupled with the temptation for evil that is in every human.

Also: Omylouse. I consider myself a major fan, and it is a MUST see. If nothing else, you gain a greater appreciation for landscape. At the best, you gain a viewing, living, hearing, experience for the story that you love, albeit slightly differently. See it, then make your judgment.

I do agree with you on Boromir! His part was one of the best in the movie! It's just that horn call.. heheh... the whole theatre almost burst into a laughing fit! I'm almost scared to see what Helm's Deep will bring
I'm still amazed with the Balrog scene...it was so awesome... maybe because that is exactly how I'd pictured it My friends that went with me, who hadn't read the books and had a LOT of trouble sorting out the characters' names, could remember the name of the Balrog!

Yeah. All of my Tolkien friends were REALLY anticipating that scene. Strange. Although I thought it was *amazing* I wouldn't have anticipated that as a defining scene.

I'm still curious... does anyone know what happened with the shards of Narsil?
The Tolkien Room
Evil Zombie Strider Posted Dec 23, 2001
Not at all. I must admit I was pretty shocked when he drew his sword in Bree and it was all in one piece. I thought Narsil might not be included at all.

Speaking of... the rhyme is missing! I guess it isn't crucial though...
I thought the scene in Rivendell was a bit odd, as Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir all happened to show up at once Although I thought most of the Rivendell scene was odd... not quite how I'd pictured it. No fireplace
And what do you think of the little plot twist, with Aragorn "choosing" to be hidden and not, at first, want to take the crown?
The Tolkien Room
Evil Zombie Strider Posted Dec 24, 2001
Its a change, but I kinda liked it. It makes him more of a "Silk" character if you know what I mean. If you don't know what I mean, nevermind because you'd have to read a whole series of books to understand.

I think it's natural for Aragorn to have a backup sword, don't you? he's not going to fight with a broken one.
