Last Chance to Rescue

Post 1

The Flea Market is having a clear out! Many of these articles have been in Peer Review for up to a decade or more with no interest shown in rescuing them. In many cases the articles are now surely out of date. Rather than let these gather dust in the Flea Market for all eternity, we feel that the time has come for these to return Back to Entry

But before they leave the Flea Market for ever, we would like to give the h2g2 community one last chance to rescue them. All you have to do to prevent their removal is volunteer to rescue them. You do not even have to have the time to rescue them now - if you feel that the article has potential, let us know in the Flea Market discussion and you can stop it from being lost forever.

Any articles that have not had any interest by the start of August will be removed from the Flea Market for good.

Article: A665444 - The Island Of Dr. Moreau, I didn’t read that part.
Author: U172238 hatameiwaku
Thread: F74125?thread=172676
A comparison of the classic novel by HG Wells with the 1996 film version. If you've read the book and seen the film, please rescue this article.

Article: A688197 - Social Ideals in Sylvia Plath's "Lady Lazarus"
Author: U189373 ivy rain
Thread: F74125?thread=181419

Article: A1037198 - SAP - Software and Applications in Data Processing

Do you know what this entry is on about? Can you explain it? Then why not rescue this before it is too late!

Article: A4127609 - Boston - East Boston - Food
Author: U1584774 mishmash
Thread: F74125?thread=1395966
An article about food in Boston - probably the one in Massachussets, not Lincolnshire. We suspect it is now slightly out of date. If you know Boston, can you confirm whether this article is still valid and amend this entry accordingly?

"Boston -East Boston - Food" is not as out of date as one might expect. I checked on all the restaurants mentioned, and all but one were still there and thriving. The one that seems to have departed is "Boston Best Beef Sandwiches".

I'm not volunteering to go to East Boston and check out the restaurants,. but I think the one deletion is all that's needed to bring the article up to date.

We're halfway through the month - is no-one interested in rescuing these entries, or providing a convincing argument why they shouldn't be removed from the Flea Market?

Icy North

The SAP one's very good. It just needs some "warts 'n' all" wisdom for, say, anyone who may be moving to a job in which they need to work with SAP. I'd add more, but I haven't really used it in anger to that degree. I know much more about Oracle than SAP.

I have a friend who works with SAP. I'll try contacting him and asking him to have a look at it.

It's the last day of July. So far we have heard:
A4127609 - Boston - East Boston - Food
It is not as out of date as one might expect... all but one restaurant is still there and thriving

and

A1037198 - SAP - Software and Applications in Data Processing - people who use SAP seem happy with this entry.

And I wish to take the Dr Moreau article further.

Does anyone else have anything to say before tomorrow - this is your last chance to rescue!

Milla, h2g2 Operations

I like the SAP one, but don't know much more about SAP than what's in it - only touched on validating a few custom add ons to it...

I vote for rescue. Does that mean I do it?

You certainly can rescue it if you wish to - I'm sure Icy North and possibly even Trig's friend will be able to help.

As 3 people have mentioned that they feel that the SAP entry is worth keeping, it and the entry Doctor Moreau (which I've decided to take on) are kept.
However it's a Flea Market farewell to:
New York City - Queens - Forest Hills - Living
Social Ideals in Sylvia Plath's "Lady Lazarus"
Boston - East Boston - Food

So, pinch, punch for the first of the month, and five more opportunities to return an entry into Peer Review, or say goodbye to them from the Flea Market forever.

This month's five are:

Article: A1029737 - Pubs in Bedford
Author: U225598 reg/petro
Thread: F74125?thread=820245
smiley - aleA wonderful article about all the pubs in Bedford, but surely, a decade after it was written, no longer accurate. Do you know Bedford, and can you make this entry up to date? (Sounds like a good excuse for a researcher to organise a h2g2 meet-up / pub crawl in Bedford to me.)smiley - cheers

Article: A4113398 - Working as a Courier in Atlanta
Author: U1576302 - Ormewood
Thread: F74125?thread=1273175
smiley - bikerAll anyone would ever want to know about working as a courier in Atlanta, but how many Researchers on h2g2 work as a courier in Atlanta? Does anyone have similar experiences?

Article 1: A999129 - Troubleshooting connections from a laptop to a projector
Thread: F74125?thread=324701
Article 2: A999110 - Configuring and connecting your laptop to a projector for a presentation
Thread: "F74125?thread=324696
Author: U221263 - Logan 6
All anyone ever wanted to know about connecting laptops and projectors together, but were afraid to ask.

Article: A529814 - Writing and the pen
Author: U171074 - Slartibartfast's Helper
Thread: F74125?thread=105166
smiley - oribAn article promoting writing diaries, novels and generally using pens.smiley - biro

Do any of these appeal to you? Would you like to rescue them, or at least provide a convincing argument as to why they should be kept in the Flea Market?

I have relatives in Bedford, but I know little about pubs. If anyone wanted to organise a pub crawl there I'd be interested in joining it, though, as long as I wasn't expected to drink much.

I've mentioned the SAP entry to my friend, and sent him a link to look at it, and he's said that while he does use SAP, he's not really familiar enough with it to contribute.

Wow, I grew up in Bedford, good to read about some of my old haunts. The Cricketers used to be my regular venue. The Bear was a goth pub when I was there and it sounds like it hasn't changed.

Sadly I left there nearly 25 years ago so can't really help anymore. Would be nice if someone could update it smiley - erm

Florida Sailor All is well with the world

I have had my eye on A529814 since you posted it.

I have some very strong opinions on the subject, and I will probably take it in a very new direction.

I am not familiar with 'The Handmaid's tale' but I am familiar with the standard definition of the 'Poison pen'.

This has been the most hectic month I have spent in the last quarter century, and the next 4 or 5 weeks are likely to be the same. After that I would like to spend some quality time on this subject.

As a draughtsman, historian and writer I probably have some unique views on the subject.

September's suggestions have a bit of a back to school theme:

Article: A768305 - Computers in schools
Author: U196427 - cubix
Thread: F74125?thread=221109
A good subject, but this is not really 'Computers and Schools', more focussed on Computers and the UK's National Curriculum around the years 1999-2002.

Article: A529742 - Kipp: Knowledge is power program
Author: U165124 - RedSky
Thread: F74125?thread=192963
An article about schooling in Texas

Article: A32927565 - Uses for outdated Guide Entries
Author: U759711 - rotundity
Thread: F74125?thread=5970404
Discussion about what to do with guide entries

Article: A829136 - A Brief History of the Letter I
Author: U195006 Captain_SpankMunki
Thread: F74125?thread=1396064
An article about one of the letters of the alphabet

Article: A614530 - Mac or PC- which is better?
Author: U181967 - Munch Dûnadan
Thread: F74125?thread=192982
An attempt to answer that age-old question.

So, any takers for any of the above? Any articles that have had no interest shown by the end of the month will be removed from the Flea Market forever!
