Good names for spaceships
F F Churchton Started conversation Jan 9, 2003
After watching variuos programmes about space travel, every programme seems to name their spaceships after something familiar, So I'm asking h2g2, what are your favourite & why?

Something familiar is easy to think of, else you'd have to make up your own name, like zzzeeeeeeooow! (my name for a really fast spaceship)
My favourite spaceship is the one in Flight of the Navigator.. !

Best Iain M Banks one was "Resistance is Character Forming"!
I'd have to have something that went against the red sports car school of space ship names. It would have be a beautiful sleek silver ship called Fluffy or Bonzo...

My farote name is the Endover, it just sort of sums up what people would want to get out of space exploration and the amount of work that is needed to get there.

Suppose the first I remember would be the `Anastasia` from Dan Dare, then it would be `Fireball XL5` from the puppet series of the same name. Then the `Jupiter 2` from `Lost in Space`. The `Nebuchadnezzar` from the Matrix should get a mention but technically its not a space-ship. My favourite would be the `Dora` Lazarus Long`s ship named after the computer that ran the ship.
From R.Heinleins book `Time Enough for Love`.

Ooops, forgot about the why part - For any of Mr Banks' it is because these warships name themselves, and they seem to (mainly) have a self-depricating sence of humour . As for Moya, she is the ship in Farscape, the best television there is Until later.....

i wish somebody would explain Farscape to me very very simply. I see little bits of it just before putting the baby to bed, and I don't get it. There's a butch bloke and a butch girl, and a hoarse girl and a weird redhead and an old dude in black rubber, and a couple of Jim henson puppets and a big guy with plait, and sometimes they're in space and sometimes they're wandering around earth - come again please?

*deep breeeeeath* The human guy (John) tried out a new spaceship and flew into a wormhole, on the other side he came across a big ship called Moya full of different aliens fleeing from the Eeevil 'Peacekeepers'.
The bit where they were on Earth was cuz John ended up back there after going through a wormhole, his friends followed and hung around on the planet while Moya waited in orbit, but he "had to go back" so said a teary goodbye and disappeared with his friends back through the wormhold to carry on fighting the peacekeepers. *phew!*
It's not one you can dip in and out of during an episode, you have to watch the whole thing, though you can skip episodes and still catch up!
