Seeing my friend for the first time after her appendicectomy. I had been really worried about her, so seeing her made my day.

Getting out of my 11 am class early and then not having my 2pm class - gives me a nice long break to do some work.

Completing all my tasks ahead of schedule at work and being told to get out of the office early and not return until at least 9am tomorrow when the boss might be able to find me something else to do.
(Gosh it's hard work being this brilliant.)

... a deep green velvet cloche ... how lovely it looks on you too! All that damn magic hat-box ever gave me was a baseball cap with a Rothmanns logo on it, which was too small and had been through a washing machine. You'd think a magic hat-box would know not to put baseball caps through washing machines!

Yum. Now tell me, when you get a chance, where one gets a pickeled onion? I have a love of all things pickeled, being from the Southern part of the US. We pickle anything that can fit in a jar, but I don't think we've ever come up with onion unless you are referring to those small pearl onions that come in jars like green olives.
For pickle lovers let me recommend the following: pickled okra (slimy, hairy, green and just plain good), pickled caperberries (I'm still not sure where these come from as they were a gift but they are an excellent if not extrordinary substitute for the plain dill pickle), and finally pickled garlic - just don't plan to kiss anyone for the next week or so.
While in the South, some pickled things to avoid: eggs and hog's feet. Yes, in all honesty, you can go into most any gas station in the South and find a jar pigs' hooves soaking in what appears to be a pink jar of formaldyhide. The boiled eggs soak in the same pink liquid which really is the main cause for concern.
Oh yes, and to what this has to do with the best thing that happened to me today: Mom is making fried okra. See, in the south, if you don't pickle it, you fry it.

Pickled Onions?
My teacher has got bunions
The size of picked onions...
No, that isn't how you do it. I think it is shalots (scallions, in US English?) in malt vinegar with spices, which I assume are mace, cinnamon, peppers, chilis if you are so inclined, cloves and things like that.

Traditional pickling spice ingredients (per 1Lb jar):
1 tbsp coriander seed (whole)
1/2 tbsp black peppercorns (whole)
1/2 tbsp white mustard seed (whole)
1/2 inch cinnamon stick (crumbled)
5 dried chillis
5 cloves (optional)

I LOVE this site - from 'the best thing that has happened to you today' to a recipe for pickled onions in 19 easy steps!
Allspice. How could I forget allspice?
The smiley was a substitute for a smiley, which in our case we do not have. Such a pity it looks as if it is in such a bad temper!
