Yes, the movie is *that* funny.
Not so much after Cary Grant has to dress in drag in order to board the ship transporting "war brides" back to the states, but all the red tape he has to go through in order to get permission in the first place... Red tape designed with "war brides" in mind.
It really was a true story, although I have to imagine that there were not only details left out (because of the nature of Hollywood censorship at the time), but that other details may have been exagerated just a wee bit.
