Sorry if this is a stupid question... but what exactly is "indie" music? I've heard of it...and I suppose it's from India... what instruments do they use? What are some songs in this genre that are the most well known? Thank you!!

'Indie' music is so named because it used to be predominantly published by independant record labels, so wasn't commercial (punk was probably the ultimate in indie, for a while). It's generally used to describe non-rock guitar bands, but doesn't really mean much anymore, since Britpop brought guitars back into the mainstream a few years back.
It has nothing to do with India, unfortunately. It'd be good to see crowds of teenagers playing air sitar!

Yeah indie music used to be punk, bleccch, now its all sorts of different styles. If you want examples of indie bands, check out the unicorns, modest mouse, the flaming lips, and the decemberists. there are many more than those of course, but those are my favorites.

Okay, maybe it was just a bad recording...but I got a Flaming Lips album out of the library, and it sounded really bad.
But thanks for the info!

Hi, I'm Dan,
I learnt the piano when I was thirteen in 1987 (makes me sound old ), but got a guitar for my seventeenth birthday and realised that it was a lot easier to play. I also play the bass and the drums a bit.
I have been singing since I first learnt to play an instrument and find that much less effort than playing any instrument.
I write my own music and have just started a band. Check out http://music.download.com/danladle or even http://danladle.125mb.com for some of the noises I have made.
I have a bunch of musicians and bands that I listen to, for some reason Jerry Cantrell isn't big in the UK, he should be! The Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam on the other hand are known around the world and deservedly so.
Newer artists I'm in to are people like Snow Patrol, Audioslave and the Scissor Sisters. If you like Snow Patrol you should find out about the Cranebuilders, because they are good too, just not as famous.
I still like the stuff I listened to when I was younger too like Swervedriver, Catherine Wheel and Alice In Chains and the classics like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Jimi Hendrix.
All I want from the Musicians Guild is to hang out with people with similar interests and maybe get some constructive criticism about my music.
If anybody lives anywhere near me they could always come along when my band starts playing in front of audiences instead of in my house and in practice rooms .
Cheers
Dan

Hi Dan
Welcome to the Guild - you'll find our membership badge at A434648
As for feeling old, I started playing the guitar when I was 10, in 1983, which makes me even older...
Good luck with the band

I play guitar and have done for almost 13 years, i've been in many bands and played many a gig, we were on the roster with Solid Entertainment but disbanded after moving to new pastures, we are currently trying to set some time to one side to record in a studio in York, fingers crossed!
My favourate musician is by far Jeff Buckley, but my main influences come from grunge and metal, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Pantera, the list is endless. I also enjoy Joe Satrianis work, that's some pretty impressive guitar playing.
What I'd like to do is express my musical opinions, regard music composure and modern music. I'm also a fan of classical music and i'd like to know some material I can pick up to expand on that side of my collection.
It's cool to have found a music guild here and would greatly appreciate being a memeber!

Ok, I can't get my head around that GuideML format, I wanna get my Music guild badge on there, but when I put it on it makes my text all one paragraph, and I was wondering how to get the spaces between line to do that, can anyone help me on that please?

When you change your page to GuideML, you need to enclose each paragraph in tags:
First paragraph goes here...
Second paragraph goes here...
and so on...

Hey, I play the piano 8 years) & last year started the flute. Im supposedly really good & have alot of talent, but they havent heard my mate play.Next year im looking at starting the euphonium. I play in the school symphonic band, which is heading down to Nationals in just over a week, & also at my church. I was raised as a classical musician, but I prefer to play more rhythmic songs. I also did a bit of singing a couple of years ago at intermediate.

1: Bassist. I have a fretted Kramer Bass & a Fretless Fender Jazz Bass. I own an upright acoustic as well, but it is in dire need of repair. I can & do sing, but I have a long way to go before I get any good.
2: The Canadian Rock Group, Rush. I started playing Bass over 5 years ago and once I started to learn Rush songs (About a year & a half into playing) I knew I'd never be able to stop. Now, through the musical power of Rush, I've learned to like all kinds of music. My favorite Genres are Rock & Roll and Jazz.
3: I would like friendship, inspiration, & such.... But whatever I get will be fine.
I do know some HTML.... but I'm afraid I know absolutly nothing about GuideML. I just joined h2g2 today & I'm still learning about it. I really like it though.
